Nope, especially the obscure ones. After all, how would anybody know what I named my last plane? But, who cares? Whenever somone thinks of the "Ringmaster", they think of Matt Kania's profile design, right? And yet there is the "Original Ringmaster" which, by its name, should predate it. Just pick a name that you like and go for it. (You might try "Clodbuster", maybe, or "Belly Flop". They are probably available.)

Hmm, my Uncle had a racehorse called Miss Begotten. Stakes winner at that.

But then remember the Voodo that my dad and I made into a short coupled profile? It was yellow and white epoxy paint, with a big smilely face on the wing. Dad called it the "Seminole Sesame", John Robbins called it the "Cesspool Sesame" after he saw it fly. That was the one that almost killed me after the lines got snagged on a weed at takeoff and flew right at me.

Double-duty name as supposed advocates of free speech in NW have passed laws banning state employees, state maps, state printed matter, etc., to use "Oriental," (Washington state) or "Squaw," (Oregon state).

There will be no opportunity presented for guesses as to which of two major political parties these legislators belong, as some things are simply too easy...Splish!!

In many American Indian languages it translates to something that you wouldn't want your momma called and that we are not allowed to post here.

It's definately on the list of things that will NEVER be on the wing of one of my planes!

While this may be regional in nature, you assume too much.

The Yakima Indians, many of whom are life-long friends of the Rutherford family, commonly use the word "squaw." It means nothing more nor less than "the old lady."

Granted, there has been a movement from the politically correct set afoot to convince us white boys that "squaw" means things heard only in rough bars, in rap or hip-hop music, or at the DNC.

In any case, when someone or some group begins insisting that I not use certain words, you can pretty much assume I will begin gleefully using them as often as possible. The deal with re-naming my Oriental to Oriental Squaw was just such an opportunity. Even my mother--God rest her soul--thought it funny...

Hey, no intention to offend anyone. Just Dan and I sparing a bit. It is, after all, just a joke. I've worked (and lived with) with Native cultures for many, many years. My experience has been that non-Native people are almost always more concerned about this stuff that the Natives are...unless it becomes really offensive (ala the Atlanta Braves "Tomahawk Chop")

While not wanting to offend anyone, as is usually the case, someone will work hard to find a way to become offended.

You have to love the "PC" society.

Even when the kit was first issued, I never thought the "Squaw" name would be good for sales, not the same macho image as "Chief" and "Tomahawk". It would need to be a lot better plane to sell under that name.

1973 dictionary just says "Indian name for woman or wife".

1986 dictionary says "native American term... offensive,,, mild term of contempt." Not a good name in 1955, totally unacceptable now.

We're still on solid ground with "Chief", Old French word. Entirely positive. Applied to President of the United States, as well as tribe leaders.

The term "Sturzkampfflugzeug" might be offensive to some.
