Paint lesson learned

Startin Over,,,Enough of this experimenting for me. I just tried Luster Coat and Ultra Coat paint products. The Ultra Coat covers very nicely and one can probably would do a 400 sq.in. plane well. The Luster Coat covers poorly (at least in the color I tried) I used 2 cans and have not gotten good coverage at all. I suspect to cover a 500/600 sq.in. plane it would take at least 4 cans. And, I found the 2 brands do not mix very well at all. I put Ultra Coat on first, (white base coat) and then put the Luster Coat color over it. Where I tried to get a good first coat coverage, the paint aligatored.
I have painted with Dupont Choma Systems for years and will be going back to it as soon and I can get this mess blasted off my "Ru-ent" (okie word) plane.

On my last plane I used Sig dope and the PPG Strato clear urathane. Looks good but we'll see how it last's. The reason I say this is one (dope) is a chemical bond and urathane is a mechanical bond. So my next plane will be all PPG. How I do this and not pick up too much weight is when mixing I do it on a scale. Meaning 50-50 is 56.66 grams and 56.66 grams= 4 oz paint. Then add reducer as needed, as it gasses off and is lost. But remember with urathane it is a plastic so what you spray there stays there!

Too much and you have a large barge!

I have used clear Luster-Cote over Sig dope.....luckily it was only on the cowling. After a season it is starting to peel. Just a small experiment. Never do a whole plane when experimenting, I stay with the tried and true for best results. The worst thing that ever happened to me was using old hobby poxy, the stuff really never cured and stayed soft and would wipe off after fuel got on it. The plane was a .25 RC job and I was really having fun flying it. Every one has at least on "good" story about finishing, now you do! Jim J.

The Chroma Clear by Dupont will go over anything I believe. I has used it over Krylon, the cheapest Wally World sprays, and most of the dopes. I also have used it many times over water colors that have been used for graphics. I will stick with the Dupont stuff from now on. Carve this in stone!!!

I tried urethane over dope a couple of times and liked the results -- until I had to do a repair. Then I discovered that dope would not go over urethane.

It took a lot of sanding to clear away enough urethane to get a decent repair job.

I will not be mixing products again.
