3D images..

Remember that craze a few years ago, with all the "3D" images, with the hidden pictures, etc. ?

Here's an example:

In case you don't know how to view it, get very close to the screen, relax your eyes (I usually start by crossing my eyes, then relaxing the cross) draw slowly back, and look "past" the image, let your eyes focus in the distance.

Soon you will see an interesting 3D "hologram" effect. Try it.

OK, how do I relate this to model airplanes? I was just thinking, maybe I could make a decal with one of these, and put it on my stunter? (No special display or print technique is involved.)

I can see the 3D flowers but the ones I use to look at alway had some type of figure in them. All I see is the 3D effect, is there more?

Some people have trouble with these, but I seem to be able to focus on it properly quite easily. In fact, I can back way away from the screen and maintain the image. The farther away, the "deeper" the image goes.

I think the real trick would be to paint the whole plane in a similar type of image. Make it so the judges, when looking at the airplane, will see the fuselage as about ten feet farther out than the wing itself. Ah, now let's see what kind of points they give you for that pattern.

Paint profiles so they look full fused!

These are magic. I never can understand why 3D photography hasn't caught on more, even replaced normal photos. I have a 3D 35mm camera, using it for slides, and make do with a viewer. One day would like a projector.

I work for the telephone company, and some of the equipment has rows of identical cards with lights on them. If you look at these the same way you look at that picture, it has the same effect, if a card is just a little further out than the rest it looks like it's sticking out at you...if figured that out very late one night while trying not to doze off.

Don't forget how long you have to look at the plane (as you're flying it). Can you imagine trying to get through the pattern while looking at something like that??
