Torp 29 S

Hello SSW folks, I have a guestion for you, I have a new Torpedo 29 S that has only been run on my test stand. It seems to be a good running engine. The Question!!!!!!! What would this engine be good for? I am just learning the pattern and am apt to build anything, do anything and crash at any time!! The engine really runs well on the stand and burns the same fuel as the other engines that I am running AK: FOX 35 OS MAX S 35 and the like. SIG 10% nitro and 25% all castor. Would this be a good engine for me to train the pattern on or should I just keep using the FOX and OS MAX engines, Thanks for the help, Dave Markley

The Torp .29S is more of a collector's item then it is a beginner stunt engine. My advice is to sell it and buy another engine to learn
to stunt. Either an LA .25 or LA .40 would work for you. you should be able to sell the Torp for $40 - $45 if it is in excellent condition.

My advice is to keep it. Might be you will want to build something classic someday and will want to power it with a classic engine. The 29S is a good engine.

Use a modern engine or the Fox engines to learn the pattern with. You can get all the parts you need for the new stuff where the Torp is gonna be more one of a kindish.

Learning to fly the pattern you will set your engine over lean, you will set your engine too rich, you will smack the ground with the spinner/prop/propnut you will grind the head off of an engine or two. These things and more are not life threatening to an engine IF you can get replacement parts. If you are lucky enough to have the parts list for the Torpedo, you still are going to have a bit of a wait for the parts to come in after you order them.

Use a modern engine and save the Torpedo for a time when you are flying OTS and know what you are doing.

A few years ago, I did some flights with a 29S on a Buster. It differs from the "standard" Greenheads, in that it runs in a 4-2-4 break more like a Fox or a McCoy (the Greenhead 29 and 35 run better in a Wet Two). I liked the engine pretty much, but found it a real hog for fuel, for some reason.

I suppose that the 29S, released in '57, was something of a belated nod to the Fox way of setting up a stunt/sport run. But they didn't sell too many of them. And, moving forward almost 50 years, they don't pop up on ebay all that often.

De: You can do a bit better than $45 for a 29S in excellent shape.

I gave $56.29 for my K&B .29S, in like new condition, two years ago. I am sure You can get more than $45.00 for yours. I hope to use mine on a Sassy Saucer classic stunter (if I ever get it finished). Actually, I am attempting to replicate the Sassy Saucer a flying buddy of mine built in 1955. He covered it with silk/Aerogloss finish (white with orange rudders, there are two on this plane)and powered it with a K&B .35 Greenhead. I loved the plane as it is fascinating to watch it fly and the sound that comes from it, you will never forget, once you have heard it. The best I can describe it is that it is like putting a Torp .35 on a base drum and flying it around the circle. The plans recommend a Fox .29 stunt engine, but the plane requires a heavier engine for balancing. I thought the Torp .35 might have been a little more power for this plane than it needed, so I obtained the K&B .29S Greenhead to use in its place. I think it will work great, if I can ever get the darn thing covered and finished!.....T.Durrill

The Torp 29S and 29C are nice motors, but not so valuable to put them into a display case! My advice is to run them. Remember, these engines are designed to run 2-cycle flat out!

Sorry my offer offended your values. I had thought it was quite reasonable considering the inclusion of a new, spare NVA and 2 gasket sets, and postage/insurance. I would have preferred that the engine go to a dedicated CLPA guy.

We'll see what eBay thinks . . .
