Can you get ricin poisoning from the castor oil in model fuel?

No, only the Castor bean is poisonous. I suppose poorly processed castor oil might be hazardous, but I've never heard of that being a problem. The methanol in model fuel, however, is a powerful toxin, and destroys brain cells. I believe it's oxidized into formaldehyde and carbon monoxide. It's also deadly to eye tissue!

I've goten sig OS fuel 10/20 in my eye and didn't hurt it at all
(i think). Plus my dad acidentaly drank some fox fuel. don't ask

I don't know anything about this, but did a Google search, and picked this url. http://science.howstuffworks.com/question722.htm Ricin is left behind in the mash from squeezing castor beans, but presumably, it would be filtered out. Castor oil is taken medicinally, and still available in California, right? What, me worry?

Too much balsa dust makes me sick, but not as bad as the old AeroGloss dope. CA doesn't bother me, but I'm careful with it. Budweiser gives me a headache. Castor doesn't seem to cause me any trouble, but some of the fuels used at the Bladder Grabber made my eyes burn...and it wasn't the castor oil, or the nitro. When I flew ukie speed in the '60's, I rarely used less than 65%, sometimes 75%, occasionally 80% nitro. Steve

ever got a snoot full of Top Fueler exhaust fumes? (CHOKE, Gag, puke, fart,...GAG!) Wild man,..nitro (I think?) that brings tears to the eyes. Thank goodness for tears!

p.s. Question: How come you can only smell the castor of exhaust fumes when standing outside the flight circle? Or does my flying stink so bad I can't smell anything else?

I did--- I was at the Tulsa national challenge in 1972,lucky enough to be in the pit with Don Garlits's crew and standing with/behind the car at the starting line during pre-stage burn-outs WAAY TO COOL. Iloved the smell---course I was only 12}>

It's my understanding that you cannot just drink any old form of castor oil. It must be medicinal type i.e purified to extraordinary lengths to make it fit for human consumption.
All I know about the WW1 pilots was that it helped to like a good alcohol buzz to get rid od the castor taste in your mouth, They did not however willingly drink any of that castor stuff. Yes Mr Clean is right you really did have a loose bowel after a castor filled flight into the wild blue.

Tests years ago, proved inhailing Fumes from an internal combustion engine, castor powered , may have the same effect as taking it.
I was told midget racer drivers were running on Sunday, then running on Monday.
I have no written proof , but was told by a creditable source.
Anyway, sure beats talking about PAMPA people and politics.

Re: Castor fumes and flying as related to "running". Same was said of WWI pilots. After inhaling aerofuel/castor fumes for the duration of a sortie, the first place they hit when back on the ground was the head.

If Castor Oil from fuel was a source of Ricin, I've been dead nearly 50 years. Based on the amount that was reported to have killed that politician some years ago, the fatal amount is a few micrograms?
