Control Line Flying in Macomb and Oakland County

I'm retired from GM now and am looking for combat or sport flyers for weekday flying in the tri-county area.

Am espeically interest in flying NO-muffler combat jobs, maybe at Rouge.

I was out flying wid Keats today. I gave him back two 1961 combat jobs he sold me in 1986.

He got them in the air, but with mufflers, kinda slow. Not like the old days.

Not sure about right now, but there was some flying for combat going on at the Ford axle plant on 18 1/2 (?). Last I heard though, was that parking lot got full and nobody was flying. Might be worth asking to some of the other Dee Troy It combat fliers.

I checked out the area in Stoney Creek Park as suggested by Currell. Frank sniffed it out and approved it.

On Wedsnesday, Oct 6 there were 2 guys flying kites. One of them confirmed that this is the CL field.

I costs $4 a day or $12 a year to get into the park. I plan to join in 2005. I can take my planes, dog, golf clubs, bike, and wind surfer. That should cover me for any weather or crowd conditions.

Incidently, I test-flew my Sig Twister again, with the latest in it's progression of engines. By far - the best yet !! A Super Tigre G21/40 that I used for rat racing from 1962 through 1965. Still a top-notch stunt engine.

Oh, Jim, you asked me about some plans for tethered racers. Maybe 15-20 years ago??

I finally found it.

We used to run these at Orbiteers meeting at Royal Six, also at Cloudbusters meetings a tile shop somewhere in Royal Oak. The big cahuna was out "State Meet" at an armory in Saginaw. Activities ran from 1961 through 1965.

They include both cars and airplanes with .020 and .049.

My planes were pretty much like John's. In reality, anything with flat wings and good aliognment will fly.

John: Unfortunately, we no longer can fly at the Ford axle plant at 18.5 mile. There was a change of management there, and the control line guys responsible for continuing the relationship failed to do so. That's my understanding, anyway.

This was a good place to fly. Ford didn't worry about mufflers, for example. The biggest problem was when Ford products (cars and trucks) weren't selling well, and these new vehicles would be stacked up on the tarmac, periously close to the grass field that Ford so graciously let us use.

A Veco spinner stuck in a Ford grille is not A Good Thing (NIB Vecos are expensive these days).

By the way, the Hoopee pylon racer reminds me of the Hollow Log Proto Speed planes we race at the NVCL Musciano Meet every September. Of course, our planes are people-flown, on two lines at 35 feet.
