Scientific Cadet 1/2A or Stuntmaster 35

My friends and I flew a lot of 1/2 A's around 1960.

I believe that that the Scientific Cadet was the best kit on the market. It had a built-up wing and abox fuselage. I had tow of them. Does anybody have plans or a photograph. I wanna build a couple more. Will use memory if necessary.

Also, I nver built a "Giant Stuntmaster" then, but would lioke to try one now. Any records???

Check in with Stuka Stuntworks Plans department. Uncle Leonard (our host)has the Scientific Cadet plans.

I got a set from him a few years back... 'flew them in the early 60's as well.... great little stunt bird.

My current one is built (for 2 or so years now...) but needs dope finish. Your posting has me glancing at her on the wall and thinking about finally making it happen.....

With a couple of more bays of span added to the wing it could be a real nice platform for a Norvel Big Mig .049...hmmmm.

I have about 70 or 80 Scientific plans, and the Cadet is there, somethere, I think. $5 shipped if I have it, or we can swap for something, since price is trivial.

I am flying a Giant (Fox 35) Stuntmaster right now, but don't have the plans. This is the one that sat in a pole barn for decades before I restored kit, and hornets had made nests in the wing. I thought I had cleaned them all out before covering, but after a few flights, it would sound like sand moving around inside (the nests would quickly pulverise once in the air). So I would shake and shake the plane, OB wing down, slit the silkspan, and remove the stuff to the outside of the airframe, kind of like shaking salt on your McDonald's fries. Thinking this solved the problem, would fly again, and once again, more hidden nests would turn to salt. And so on, shake, etc, about three more times.

The G. Stuntmaster is interesting, in that Scientific had very few larger sized CL models (Giant Kingpin is another). The aspect ratio is small, and a one wheel LG (a la Flite Streak) is intended by the design, but I put a conventional two wheel on mine.

Both the G. Stuntmaster and Kingpin are hard finds as kits, so grab 'em if the opportunity arises.

Jim brought up my Ambroid Stuka. I never put so much work into one plane and demolished it so totally on the first day. Pushrod failure at full speed on Rouge concrete circle.

Much more payoff on several simpler planes.

Tom Dixon has good, buildable plans for the Giant Stuntmaster and Giant Kingpin. I might fly the Giant Stuntmaster at Huntersville in Classic if my Vulcan is not ready. I use a Veco 35 stunt in the GSM.
IMHO it flies better than a Ringmaster.

Hi, Paul. Way back in the old days you built a Stuka Stunt why not another one. I am building one because I remembered how nice yours was, after yours met its demise you kept it the basement for years. Did you ever rebuild it ? I am about to start on a few Keats Banshes ,do you still have any ?

That Ambroid Stuka kit had enough little bitty parts to build twenty combat jobs.

I was on a 44-mile bicycle tour today. While riding, i contemplated building a much larger and simpler Stuka of my own design.

Either that or a Boeing P-26. The P-26 has a tie-in to our local Selfridge AFB.

The Stuka, on the other hand, has been linked to the National Socialists, who are currently in a state of disrepute.

I have the Stuntmaster prototype in hand, thanks to Currell. Reverse engineering is in progress.

Only question is: "why build one? just fly this one"

Next question, is there still a source of VooDoo leading edges. You know, 1" square balsa, machined to a symetrical airfoil shape. Suntemaster needs one, along with a lot of other 60's projects.

I use the LE material from Sig, available at the closest hooby to me. IIRC, Lone Star also offers it. (?)

I gonna browse the Prop Shop today. Lookin' for Willimas Brothers (plastic, not rap singers) stuff.

I looked at Sig's inventory. Did not see LE's big enough.

I looked at balsa wood at Rider's Hobbies. A piece of 1/2 x 4 x 36 is offered at $7.50. If I ever need another piece of wood, I'll still order from Balsa USA, same item for $1.49. Most peopel do nopt know that they grow great balsa in the UP.

Sorry to hear that Paul. Since my Local (40 miles away) orders from Sig, I was pretty sure that it was Sig. But.... Anyway, it is a perfect match for the LE stock that was used in all those old profile kits from PDQ, Sterling, Goldberg, Scientific, etc. 36" lengths.
