Naake

I just got a set of plans from our host, Leonard, for this plane.It is 598sq. in.The plans say up to a .51 engine.Would an S.T.51 be too big and heavy for this plane?I've seen some pics of the Naake in stunt news,but I don't recall what the guys were using for power.

I've seen a coulple of them powered by ST .46s that flew well. Also Dale Barry has one powered by an Aero Tiger .36.

When I get around to building my Nakke I'll power it with an OS LA .46.

It's reasonable with a good Fox. The one I know of is an excellent flier with a Rustler/Merco 40 "Metamorph".

I haven't quite got mine done yet,but I plan on using the new PA40 ultra lite,it should balance pretty well.A ST51 might be a little heavy,but you can always add a little tail weight.

Instead of adding weight why not cut the nose down.

naake is classic legal
you really could not shorten the nose unless you could prove it was built like that...
you could but it would not be "in the spirit of the event"

EDIT: I am pretty sure that Kevin Stewart flew his with a K&B 40. maybe someone who was closer to him at that time could let us know.

YES! A ST 51 is way too heavy. The orange one shown in Stunt News belongs to Eric Taylor of the New Albany, IN.,"Skyliners". He tried the 51 and was way too nose heavy.
The ST 46 is the engine of choice!

Hi, I have a Nakke that I first flew in 1997 it has about 650 flights on it. I have tried a few engines in it. I Tried a Fox .40 ,super Tiger .46, OS .32,Magnum .36 & Super Tiger .51.
The Super Tiger .51 is heaver & bigger than you really want in that plane. The Tiger .46 is very nice providing it is a strong Tiger (mine is a bit weak). If you want to win the Worlds or maybe beat absolutly every one in sight I thing the OS F .32 , a strong Thunder Tiger .36 ,a good running Magnum .36. Would be the best engine.
If you have a Fox .40 that runs well & you like it might be great also. The Tiger .51 is a great engine but too much for that plane .
Suit your self only & please have fun. it's very stable design & a blast to fly.

Thanks to Kerrko Kervahuo from Finland, I have a picture of one of Juhani Kari's original NAKKE which is being restored.
Juhani flew his with a Veco 35. He was 2nd in the worlds in '64 (at age 16) with it, but should have won.
Any strong 35 up to a 40 will be plenty of power to fly a well built one.
The ST 51 will work, but as everyone else has said, it will be nose heavy resulting in added dead weight to balance it.

Thanks Bill and thanks to all with advice about the engines.In the picture of the original, it looks as if there is a wire across the middle of the aluminum gear.Was that there, or is it just something in the picture that looks that way?Thanks again.

Yep, there is a wire across between the aluminum gear. It *might* have been used as the axle, not sure, but that's my guess.
It's an original 40 year old plane, supposed to be one Juhani used in the world champs.
An intresting fact was that Kari often flew it with the cowl removed to remove a little weight from the nose.
