Larger Cox Tank

Is someone making a larger tank for a Cox Black Widow? Neal:)

Kavan makes a tank extender for the Black Widow (make sure you get the Black Widow one, not the Babe Bee because the former has longer bolts.

I got mine when G&D Hobbies closed, but I think (as someone else mentions in the Classifieds I think) that Hobby Lobby (the Hobby Shop not the Craft Store) carries the extender. Here is a link http://www.hobby-lobby.com/

The tank works, but it is a little fiddly. Also as I note (somewhere on this board), the venturi extension came pretty tiny, much smaller than that of the Black Widow itself. I drilled mine out to match the Black Widow size.

A NOS (new old stock) Kavan extender has come into my house. The unit has gotten some bad mouth on this site. If you want to give it a try, e-mail me.

Attach another fuel tank to the airplane and connect it to your engine with a fuel line hose. Plug off the other fuel fill on the engine so the engine is forces to suck in fuel from the tank and not air through the fill hole. As the engine runs and the fuel is used up the engine will suck fuel out of the extra fuel tank to refill the engine fuel tank. I use to do this on .049 engines 30 years ago. It has been so long ago that I did this it is hard for me to remember exactly how this worked best. I remember experementing with the fuel tank, I tried it on both sides of the fuselage and tried the engine in different positions. As I recall the thing that worked best was to put the fuel tank on the inboard wing side of the fuselage right up next to the engine. I took the screws loose on the back of the engine and rotated the body so the needle valve is turned 180 degrees from the cylinder. Mount the engine on the airplane so the cylinder is on the outboard side parallel to the wing and the needle valve is on the inboard side parallel to the wing. The fuel hose from the fuel tank to the engine only needs to be about 1" long with the engine mounted like this. I don't remember what size fuel tank I used but it was small. As I recall the engine will run about 10 minutes on a tablespoon of fuel.

I have one of the Kavan extenders. The heads of the bolts supplied don't seal the holes in the backplate and it leaks big time. May get around to making some thin gaskets for the bolts.

We'd just take the engine apart and drill a big hole in the side of gas tank. Then run neoprene fuel from the inlet to a Perfect wedge tank. Worked better than any Black Widow, Golden Bee or "tank extender".

The trouble with that now is Estes is making more production motors and less tank motors.Also you don't want to ruin one of the Cox stunt tanks. of course the new black widow dosn't have the vents in the tank but in the backplate like a baby bee.
Other then that, putting a hole in the tank was my way of extending the run too.

Get a production motor. There must be millions of these things sitting around in peoples' attics, and you should be able to find some at flea markets.
