Has anyone painted a UKEY?

I have a Ukey .40 that I want to paint. Has anyone painted the wing covering? What did you use? Thanks in advance.

I perfer Aerogloss dope, made by Midwest, on silk or silk span. Clear, sanding sealer, then color. Larry

This plane has a foam wing, wouldn't Dope melt the foam?

You can use waterbased acrylic paint or even markers. I've seen the water based paints at the craft stores and hobby shops. Most waterbased acrylic house paints will work just fine. Make sure the markers are not using solvent inks by testing on a small inconspicuous area.

After the paint has dried you can cover with automotive clear coat. Again use the waterbased systems here.

Yes, I’ve painted parts (stripes on the wings, wing tips, and wide bands where the wings meet the fuse). My experience is with the “older” Ukey’s from Joe Just. I don’t know if the film covering is the same on the new ones. I scuffed up the area to be painted with a green 3M pad and then used Rustoleum. On one it was rattle can sprayed on, yellow. On the other it was brushed on, a lovely shade of avocado green, made with the dregs of some blue + white + yellow stuff in some Rusto cans left over from who knows when. If you mix, save some in a jar for repairs. The film is sort of wrinkled/baggy so I can’t see painting the whole wing; it will chip off of the unsupported wrinkles.

Tip #1: If you are learning inverted and outside maneuvers paint your plane avocado green. You will be very “bold” in how you fly it. Works for me.

Tip #2: This color matches perfectly with the Scooby Doo Mystery Machine van. Add appropriate stickers stolen from your kids/grandkids for additional help in over-head maneuvers. Has not worked for me, yet.

That's a great idea, "Stickers" No wait, No Paint. I've got a bunch of Motorcycle Products stickers that I've been saving, now I have a use for them.

I bought two of the Ukey 40's from Just Joe in a package deal before he sold out and haven't done anything with the kits. I'm going to try out the GRW 3.25 oz Chicken Hopper fuel tanks that Dirty Dan forced me to buy from Sig and use two OS FP .25's that I scored on Ebay.

I have a buddy of mine who is mildly interested in control line so I'm going to give him a plane and "set the hook". Then I'll talk him into joining PAMPA knowing that he doesn't have a clue as to what the organization is all about and make him vote on issues that don't concern him. After that I'll have him mount a nasty email campaign against volunteers whose service to PAMPA has been exemplary and join a Stunt Forum to whine and cry about everything.

John the Rustolium does a great job on the UKEY I use the rusto grey primer on the wood. The only place it peels is at the hinges but I changed mine to Du Bro.See YA NEAL:)

I've painted trim using Enamels with no problem.
