Finished Oriental

Well needs the Name Oriental and AMA numbers on the wing. Then the fun part of triming begins. I tried to get finished buy this week end for the Fall Fallies, but I still need the lines and handle. It's in3 days. There is always hope. Right Scott?

YEP

Uniflow vents are placed on the inside of the circle so that centrifugal force keeps the fuel from exiting during the flight. With the setup you have you might get away with it because the engine is sucking and the negative pressure will suck air into the tank,instead of letting it flow out,just never seen one on that side. I have my uniflow tube on my Oriental on the outside also and it works great with the Brodak 40.I did not know that it was suspose to be on the inside either but have heard that the inside is the place since.I would sure try it .

Its amazing what will work if you never read the book on what won't. Give it a shot.

It is amazing to think back to my youth and flying all the things that just could not be flown. That 15 oz epoxy and toothpick laden Beginner's Ringmaster........

The Brodak 40 is inverted and the gas tank has it's over flow and uniflow inlets on the same side, opposite the pickup tube. I would of had a real short piece of gas tubing connecting on the same side. I bet it will work out fine. You all really know how to scare this Beginner! I will give it a try starting it tommorow, holding it inverted and such. Will let you all know how it goes. I will be at Salem Saturday late. I quess Beginners fly Sunday. Not sure I will have the Oriental ready for Sunday?

Greg...you remember which wing gets the AMA Numbers this time? You can put them on the fuselage also. 1" minimum height, clearly legible. Nice job. I look forward to seeing you fly it, maybe this weekend. Steve

Scott: Assuming you mean "AMA Rules", NOT true for PA. As near as I can tell, that statement is based on the "Flight Safety Declaration Form", included with with all sanctions and the bag full of inappropriate paperwork sent to CD's regardless of the events held at their contest. It applies to SCALE events, and says "in CL Precision, Sport Scale and Profile,...". Also applies to R/C non-scale. Doesn't apply to CL other than Scale. I never have contestants sign it for a CL or FF contest, never return it to AMA. On the other hand, I can't recall CD'ing a contest with CL Scale. If it was required, they would not process the contest report until it was provided. Steve

Yes, If you look close you can find a dozen imperfection. But I bet if you look under the skin we all will.

Sorta. Not exactly. It's the Right wing, which happens to be the Outboard wing for most of us, but not all. The rule book is available online from AMA in PDF format. When in doubt, late at night...Steve

I started the B40. I first only put in about 3 oz. It started but wouldn't stay running long. Then I filled the tank full. I had to turn the plane over to start it. Would one of those rubber booted foam filters help that? This time it ran for about 5 min. right side up and inverted. Had a good 424 break. When it stopped I thought I would blow through a fuel line to see how much fuel was in the tank, The tank is 4.5 or 5 ounces, I can't remmember. I will have to measure it next time to make sure. Their was about a half ounce of fuel left in the tank. Is that normal being it was benched run,I would think that while in the air it might burn that up?

In my opinion, an air filter helps a lot when starting inverted, little to no effect when starting with engine upright. It just catches what would otherwise run out of the venturi onto the ground, but slightly more suction. But when the engine kicks off, there is some fuel in the filter that is sucked into the venturi as fumes...an ideal situation. Get as much running time as you can on the engine before you try to fly it. The piston fit is tighter than any of the R~C engines, and the materials much harder. That's good! Steve

Their has been about a half gallon through it already. I guess it takes at least a gallon to break this B-40 in.

You probably have enough time on it to fly it successfully. Remember, when running a plane on the gound, you probably won't get all the fuel out of the tank. It needs the centrifugal force to feed the fuel to the pick up. Sometimes lying in on it's side, outbaord wing down will get most of the fuel, but not all.

Greg, the uniflow vent's on the wrong side on my Oriental and the O.S. .35 gets the sweetest engine runs you can imagine. It's a dream, every flight. The plane flies like #*^$*#!, but the engine runs great with the vent on the wrong side, so take heart.
I will have it (now getting old) there this weekend. I've cut into it (third time!) for another trim change. Maybe it will fly better now (not likely).
