The complete 2004 PAMPA election results should be available on the PAMPA web page (http://www.control-line.org) sometime tomorrow morning or early afternoon.

Due to concerns regarding possible improprieties with the counting of the ballots this year the results have been validated by our duly elected District X Director, Brett Buck.

Respectfully,

Shareen Fancher
PAMPA Secretary/Treasurer

I think it is very sad that there were those that would dare to question your integrity!

And while Shareen was compiling election results, she also found the time to make and mail my 2005 PAMPA membership card. I received it (in Florida) less than one week after I mailed my renewal.
We are very fortunate to have a person as dedicated as Shareen.
Thank you Shareen.

WOW,

What quick results from the election... and no "Hanging Chads" or anything. It's nice to have people like Shareen backing us up. Thanks to her and to those that were nominated for caring enough to help keep a good thing going!

So, here's a question:
Do new posts become effective as of today or January 1st?
Do I still have to be nice to Brett or can I start making fun of his Mac now?

Making fun of his Mac?

Kind of like the Yugo driver telling me what's wrong with an Audi.

There are more Audis that Yugos. I think you got it all mixed up as in which is which.

Well you have a point there. A lot more people drove Corvairs than drove Porsches. That's a much closer technical analogy - one being a poorly-done rip-off of the other. But it breaks down when you note that the Corvair was cheaper. Price is a wash on Mac/PC.

BTW, I advise skipping service pack 2 and just going to the logical conclusion of the WINTEL upgrade process: www.redhat.com. Just call it service pack 3 if it makes you feel more comfortable.

We've moved off our Crays. Had an 8-processor Alpha machine for a while, and overall, it ate our YMP for breakfast, when you took into account the overall time for a sim run. Now, unfortunately, were limping around on Sun Blade 2000s. Now THAT's a Yugo.

Yeah, a YMP would be almost 20 years old.
But then any Alpha-based machine is no spring chicken either.

That's OK, I have to bring up every day. What amazes me is the absurdly unstable nature of SunOS. I would guess the thing bombs out once a month or so. That would be a miracle for Windows, but for Unix, that's sadly pathetic. Our VAX/VMS 7.x machines have been running for 15+ years, aside from the occasional power outage.

Brett. I'll bet you didn't know that Lockheed had a whole big room full of CDC computers which were water-cooled!! That was in Bldg 590, next door to the "executive swimming pool" (actually a test tank for the Lockheed "Quest-Star" undersea rescue submarine). There was a water cooling tower just outside that did nothing else than cool the water for the computers! My, how things have changed!

No I didn't know that. We have had a few liquid-cooled computers over the years, thought. Some of the Crays used artificial blood plasma (non-conductive, presumably) and they just filled the entire computer with it for direct cooling. And of course, the G5s are liquid-cooled, although I don't know what they use as a coolant.

Ok. Brett, Macs are nice, PC's suck.

Seriously though, now that my DEC Alpha bought the farm, I'm looking to get another computer to run FreeBSD on and since Mac OSX is based on FreeBSD, I'm VERY tempted to get it instead of getting another Alpha on eBay. Price is a hurting point though. A used Alpha box can be had for $300 versus $3000 for an X5

G5. But that's the very tippy-top G5, which, unless you plan on doing some A-bomb detonation sims, or plan on trying to process SIGNINT data, you couldn't possibly need. And there's a reason that Alpha machines are so cheap - they're on the way out. Along with their succesor, Itanium, apparently. Older G4 iMacs or MDDs are basically free (< few hundred dollars) for the asking.

Hi Shareen,

The part that really bothers me as a PAPMPA member, and past column writer, is that there WERE any concerns over possible improprities. Unfortunately there will probably always be those that are paranoid amongst us. I'm feel a certain sorrow that Brett was called in to verify the results. And that is no reflection on Brett! I would feel the same way regardless as to whomever did the verifying.

Again, I whole heartedly offer my thanks and appreciation for the incredible job you do.

Sincerely,
Bill Little <><

Well, I was happy to contribute. If it means taking some of the heat that Shareen was going to get, that's fine with me. Plus, I was conveniently located.

It was patently unnecessary from a technical standpoint. I thought I had her a few times, but no, I had miscounted. Very irritating!

And, to address a few people's concerns, who voted for who is staying between Shareen and I. And I honestly don't recall, for the most part. Or care, for that matter.

I was saddened to see that only 34 votes came out of District 11. I KNOW we have a lot more folks than that.

I'm just glad to see Ted won out. This despite a concerted effort to toss it all away with his campaign statement.

Despite this, there cannot possibly be any confusion over where Ted stands, the approach(es) he will take.

This is very, very good news indeed.

That's one possible interpretation, but certainly not the only one.

This isn't directly on your point, but it's in the ballpark, and I think it needs to be said here (again). In all the controversy, several people couched the VP race in terms of West Coast vs. East Coast, and in the processes, Dale Barry got, infrequently, maligned, or otherwise viewed with suspicion. That was just dead wrong.

As I said in my District 10 column, and in several posts here - Dale is a fine person would would have made an excellent PAMPA VP. I don't want to disclose private conversations in a public forum, but I will say that, without getting dragged into some political swirls during the election, Dale stood up for what was right and provided some helpful input that diffused a lot of the conflict. Obviously, Ted and Dale differ in their views on several issues. But Dale stepped up and proved himself to be a wise and thoughtful guy, and I would think we would have been very well served with either candidate.

He's definitely the kind of guy PAMPA needs.

Brett,

I agree. I received a very nice email from Dale when I inquired about his running for the VP spot. He was very informative.

Nice guy. Hope he runs for office again.

It is a good idea, and usual practice, to have at least two people count ballots. This practice is designed to catch honest mistakes.

I counted 95 PAMPA members in District 11, based on the '04 Reference Manual. Some of those are not stunt fliers, some may not fly CL, a lot are not contest fliers. A bit under 36% voted. I don't think that's a bad "voter turnout", considering. Steve
