Fall Follies

   Weather for the Fall Follies this weekend in Salem,Ore., should be OK. Rain is predicted for Friday, possibly a shower for Saturday and nice on Sunday. Hope to see many of you there!
Again, the events list:
Saturday: Northwest Sport Race, Classic Stunt, P-40 Expert, P-40 Sportsman
Sunday: Four PAMPA aerobatics classes and the traditional barbecue.
The flying field is across the road from the Salem Airport terminal. Contact me if you have questions.

The promoters of this contest maintain, every single year, that Classic will begin promptly at 9:00. This is so they will have lots and lots of help in running the Racing events. Which sometimes have started as late as 10:00.

I think you're running a real risk if arriving later than 10:30 or 11:00 and expecting to fly Classic. Remember, upon completion of Classic we will still have P-40 to fly. And over the years entry levels in the Racing event which starts off this contest have been highly variable. It is possible, although not likely, they might fly one three-up final, no heat races at all, be done much earlier than you would like.

I'm hoping to be there tonight, but the way this day is shaping up, I'm not sure. Should be.

I just wanted to have an idea if I can't leave until tomorrow. I may have to miss classic.

Dan is correct; there is only one racing event this year, so I would be ready to fly Classic by about 10:30 at the latest.

SURE WAS FUN LOTS OF FUN PEOPLE AND EVEN DIRT WAS THERE. This is one of the best events anyone can come to. From Big boy's of stunt to who can crash the best it was a super weekend.

Yep. That looks like the Salem I remember from the fall of 1964..., it just isn't raining hard enough!

I hope somebody posts some pictures from Sunday afternoon, when it was gorgeous sunshine, so we all forget Saturday's rain and Sunday morning's fog. Although, I will admit, my plane does look better photographed in the fog.

Probably not. Mark tends to start out with a set of plans, fiddle with stuff, place a few calls to Pat Johnston, maybe one or two to me, and when he is done not even Mark can accurately trace the lineage.

It is a neat model, I just wish we could see Mark more than once a year. He's a crop-dust pilot using a round-engined airplane, so his summers are a little busy. Great guy in all ways.

You might talk to both Mark and Pat Johnston. Pat tells me the wing is actually a straight version of his Bearcat wing (no dihedral). The shapes are mostly from the Bear along with somewhat scaled up moments and such. Pat and Mark can give you more accurate details.

Mark just said it had a little of everything. Sure flew nice.

Sorry, I didn't get any pictures in the afternoon. I had to leave early and it was just breaking up with some clear sky as I was driving out.

You will be most pleased to know that I failed, and by no small margin, to knock you from third place in Expert PA.

In my stead, Heavy Stunt took up the cause and thumped you with what I believe was his highest score to date.

I've got a totally self-serving report 90% written, just waiting for some really minor details--all the scores--as I totally wimped, asking Bruce to send me his pictures of the score board instead.

Actually, I'm fixin' follow Scawt Reese's lead, building up coming contest report for three or four days, coming in with two or three measly paragraphs around Friday morning.

Hope you had a *very* good reason to leave early. PW's second-round flight resulted in bulging eyeballs which many have yet to get fully pushed back into the sockets. Arm-pumping first corner of the hourglass?! Yep. It was cool...

Not precisely to AMA standards, the model appeared not to even begin turning by the five- to four-foot marks. A goodly portion of the Walker clan living in Salem did seem to appreciate what brother and/or uncle Paul can do given just a bit of familial prodding...

Tell Bruce to post some of his pictures. I just walked around for 10 minutes on Sunday morning and shot a couple of pictures. He was at it all weekend.

You mean Paul continued the series of heart stopping, 2 foot pulouts? Yeow! But hey, he was consistent. If one pullout was a 18 inches, the next one was in the identical spot.

edit: forgot. Bruce beat me, but did he catch Howard?

Being a "newbie" to the N.W. stunt scene, I haven't had much time to meet new friends. I sincerely appreciate the warm welcome I have received this past year. Thanks to all my new friends, and to the ones I haven't yet met.

How exactly do you trim a horse? Tail weight?

Here are some more pictures. When I got back and started to look at what I had taken I found most were in the fog from the morning.

There is one picture of Mark Conner and his lovely wife all decked out in the official lime green. Looks particularly bright in the sun.

I had fun. Great People, Good Flights, Good Crashes, That's it nothing to tell.....REALLY NOTHING AT ALL.

It was a great contest. It was good to see the old NW stunt posse and meet folks I hadn't met before.

I didn't enjoy the crashes, though. It wasn't like a combat contest, where I do enjoy the crashes.

I remember you, sealing the hinge lines on your Banshee was the most remarkable improvement to a model that could be imagined from a few minutes of effort.

And you're the reason I still carry a couple gallons of water in my van for when I see some poor soul who has (barely) pulled off a busy freeway in one of the worst spots imaginable. Did that Honda end up surviving the experience? You know, when I told you we were driving to the next exit even if that sucker dropped melted aluminum all over the highway?

Turned out to be a good thing that I stayed home. Got my appendix ripped out last night. Helluva way to lose weight. Expensive, too.

Really? You needed surgery on a Tuesday and could not fly toy airplanes on preceding Saturday and Sunday? What a wuss...

Did you save the offending organ? If so, use it for tip weight. It would really be neat, as we all start out with too much tip weight, but in your case as the organ dried and shriveled it would just automatically cut down on that annoying hinging.

Hope you're doing fine, although of course I hate to say so.

Yes, Dan, I have the bloomin' thing. Gonna make it into a change purse, however. While I have no references to other appendix, it looks to be too big to use for tipweight. Might change my mind and use it for a muffler. Thanks for your concern. Steve

PS: Possibly useful tip: My reg. Doktor could push on my abdomen, didn't hurt much, either side. But when he let go, it was like being hit with a lightning bolt. If this happens to you, get medical care, immediately!

From what I can see of existing models, if something is too big and/or heavy for tip weight on a particular model, that's exactly what gets used.

PW and I--he for longer than myself--are on a campaign to stomp out excess tip weight. Yes, literally! Don't leave your models on the ground in our presence, although Howard's Impact is pretty much our next target of opportunity.

Really good picture of Mike Hazel getting ready to take off. I had no idea you are able to keep those a few feet and 65 feet away in proper focus.

Bruce and I were pulling starting duties for Mike as he began to limp a bit on Sunday. Notice that he only had to leave tabulation position, walking directly to circle center whereupon one of us would give him the handle. Yes, lines "run" and cleaned! What truly great people are "Heavy" and "Da Dirt!"

Actually, we wanted to get a James Brown cape so we could walk Mike to center stage. Funny thing: CL Stunt guys don't use capes much, and so we couldn't find one.

I hate to disclose a secret, but isn't this prop cut down to the "magic" length of 11.3". Or is it "stock" <gasp>
