I finally got my cardinal ARF out to the field today and got 4 flights on the plane. Breakdown is: OSLA46 with 11/4 and Neumann tongue muffler, Powermaster 10/22, .018 lines at 64' eyelet to eyelet, 4.5 oz uniflow W/O pressure. Lap speed averaged 5.2 sec
The motor had been bench run 2x and started and ran flawlessly, suprisingly it went 7.7 minutes which was real good in light of some people posting that they are a little thirsty when new.Had a 3 lap speed up before quit a very good runner for such a new engine
First flight showed that it needed a little more outboard weightt as the outboard wing was a little high. My fault really as I didn't put in the recommended amount as the wing felt plenty heavy. Tension was a little light on the overheads. Flight was good and only simple maneuvers were done.
2nd flight added outboard weight and slightly peaked the motor a little more, Flight was better and tracking looked good , only a little bow in the line to irritate me.
Post flight inspection showed that the motor had moved forward in the clamp down mount,This is a mounting system that was adapted from R/C planes but was done completely wrong. So I'll mount the motor using DuBro fast threads in the mount.
Realigned and tightened the motor mount and moved the adjustable L/O just slightly ahead. Big improvement on the line drag issue and tension, but still not enough for my taste.
Flew the 4th flight and started to feel really comfortable with it, Stopped at this point and decided to come home and evaluate everything.
Plane is a very smooth flyer, balance it right on, corners are a little soft for me but I'll tighten them as I get used to the ship. Tension still could be a little more for me as we were flying in dead calm and I know that any wind will really soften it at the top. So is the answer more O/B weight or slightly more adj on the L/O.
Make no mistake that this is a very nice plane for the money and I have no real issues with it as it is on a par with most of the R/C ARF's available and they also need modifications to suit particular requirements.
I'd rate this and Walt Umlands Excalibur as my 2 most satisfying planes this year. Either one of these will really help you get a real handle on the pattern.
