Wow, that is a cool picture! You don't see too many "flocks" like that. Never seen an A-10 Warthog from that angle before... no surprise how it got its name. Kinda makes me wonder what kind of aircraft the picture was taken from...

and they said it was taken by thepilot in the plane.

The P-51C Red Tail is the one that went in at the Red Wing MN air show this year. It is hangared at St. Paul MN with the Minn Wing of the CAF. It is being rebuilt. Rumor has it that it might be ready for the air show circuit next year.

I've had this picture as my wallpaper on the PC for the past few months, it is a great piece of aviation art. On a more somber note, the P-51 was lost in an accident earlier this year and the pilot was killed. May he forever fly free.

Walter It's a great picture but parts of it are staged,added. The shadows are all wrong.I still like it. Where can I get the full size picture? screen saver.

Yes you are correct that this is a staged photo. It was staged in that it was put together to photograph the heritage flight that is sponsored by the Air Force. The heritage formation flights happen at many air shows throughout the year and have many different aircraft that will take part in the flights depending on who is available to fly that weekend. As a civilian pilot you must be approved by the Air force to be in a heritage flight and fly formation with the modern jet fighters.

In the photo is one of my close friends and fellow air show performer Dale (Snort) Snodgrass. He is flying the F-86 Saber and can say without a doubt that the flight took place. The photo aircraft that are used most for these pictures are the B-25 from the tail gunners position or a side window. A T-6 Texan (SNJ) is another favorite with the rear canopy slid open it makes for a clear, unobstructed view. We have even used Patty's Beech Baron with the baggage door removed on many of these flights for photos. It's windy but it works well as a camera platform.

The Navy has a similar formation that is a "Flight of the Cats". It's a formation of all Grumman fighters (Wildcat, Hellcat, Tigercat...) from WWII up to the F-14 Tomcat.

They are both a moving tribute to those that have served our country in the past as well as the present. Not only those that flew, but the people that built and made these fine aircraft to defend our country.

Saw a heritage flight at the Newburgh, NY air show last year. It was a P51 honking along and an F15 beside it that appeared to be just above stall. They made a couple of passes side by side, then on the last pass the Mustang peeled off to the left and the F15 hit the afterburner and went straight up. What a sight!

I got that old patriotic feeling that puts a lump in your throat.

While it really is a cool picture. You guys got it all wrong. Don't you see those thin double-wires sticking out of the left-wingtip of each of the airplanes....? I wonder how you could get so many scale u/control flyers to be willing to fly their airplanes at the same time?Nick Vanmatre

The shadows are all wrong because he had the flash set incorrectly! Or maybe it was a passing cloud.
