Twister 'ish

I finally got my Twister variant finished and flew it last weekend.

Built with Airsail contest balsa and covered with light modelspan white tissue, silk on open structure and coloured tissue trim. Weighs 34.5 oz.
Very happy with the OS 30 FS. Way more get up and go than LA25, beautiful engine run as set up, with uniflow, no pressure. It was a bit quick at 4.8 secs/lap on 60' ETE 015" lines, Master plastic 9x6 and 12.5% fuel. The wind was pretty strong and quite turbulent, but tension was good all round. Has leadout adjust, tip weight box and no side thrust. The only part I used from the original Twister was the airfoil, I can't really call it "Fancher'ised", but that's where most of the changes and inspiration came from......Thanks Ted!!
My 14yo daughter did the tissue lettering, blue over orange, nice to have company in the workshop........
This first taste of 4 stroke power is very promising.

I will now make a tank that doesn't run for ever...(too used to 2 strokes) and try different props, line length and less nitro.

Haven't tached it yet, but will next time I run it. Seems to like small props best, but still only has around an hours running. I've got an APC 10x5 to try and I think a little less nitro, as I think I can hear the occasional knocking. I'm still coming to grips with hand starting, it kicks well

And... being in New Zealand it's now late afternoon on the 13th so the neighbours won't mind.....

I just ran the 30 on 12.5% nitro, 20% 70/30 syn/caster

APC 9.5 x 4.5........... 12900 rpm

APC 10 x 5.............. 10700 rpm

While the 10x5 felt stronger, the motor didn't hold a setting as well as the smaller prop. I'll continue to use the smaller one until the motor's done a lot more work, then give the 10x5 a try.

I use a OS48FS and found that thay like Power Master 20%-20% when I flew R/C the OS and YS FS from 91-140 all ran good in Pattern planes, just thought you might give it a try , four stroke should run on large props and rich, thay have a lot of torq.

Do you know what the ingredients of Power Master fuel are? I’ve not seen it available here in New Zealand. I have unlimited supplies of methanol, castor, nitro and Coolpower oils, I can mix my own “Power Master” blend if I know what's in it, ie is it all castor or...?

It appears that they don't keep any secrets, except, perhaps, for the identity of their Synthetic Oil.

I just gave the 30 another run... This time with the APC 10 x 5 and 5% nitro, 20% 70/30 syn/castor. I got a really nice consistant run, slightly richer setting and 10700rpm. Felt strong and happy. I'll try this setup at the weekend if the weather plays ball. It's spring here and we get a lot of strong winds at this time of year, mainly on Sundays......
These tests are done at sea level, I can hear the waves behind me as I type...

Just a quick update on the OS 30FS in my Twister'ish. It is now running 15% nitro/18%oil(70/30syn,caster) and an APC 11 X 4 on 63" .012" lines, a very nice sport model. I do get one flick starts, now that it's well run in and have about 20 flights on her. With summer just around the corner (supposed to be already...!!) I will be having a ball with this model....FUN....

I would check with Bob Zambelli about the Saito .30.....I would venture that he and the Philly Flyers have the most time on them here in the US.

It's an OS .30FS. How would Saito .30 data help?

Powermaster 20-20 is 20% Nitro/20% Klotz/60% alcohol. If you can figure out the low viscosity oil they use in Helio mixes, that might be better. Great looking "Twisted". Steve

We are in Auckland, New Zealand and have been opperating for 50 plus years. We are in the process of starting an on line shopping site, which should be up and running in about a month. Then you should be able to order what you want.
Airsail imports it's balsa in block form and cuts it's own sheets, sticks etc, a lot of it to suit our kitset manufacturing. We also supply local and overseas customers with small to bulk orders of sheet.
The contest balsa is set aside during production (mainly by me, cause I have a love affair with the stuff) it consists of mostly quarter grain of varying densities. If you would like some, simply send a list of your requirements, eg, quarter grain 1.5 x 100x 915 weighing between X and Y grams to [email protected] and we would contact you re availability, the stocks are not huge.

Hmmm.. Any of this wood come from Papua New Guinea or Indonesia, out of curiosity?

I might note that, at least with a Saito 56, I had very inconsistent engine runs of straight 20/20 fuel. Several different batches, but had a lot of surging and inconsistent runs. I used castor to jump the oil content up to 24% and things improved remarkably. I suspect a heat issue. But it works much better on 20/24
