Fall Follies/ PW Impact

Hi guys,
Just wanted to say I had a great time visiting with everyone at the recent Fall Follies contest in Salem. Interesting flights considering last time I flew the Cardinal was back in May.
Also, it was good to see my dad and get in some laps in the racing area as well as see Dave and Joe again.
Of course I would be lost without mentioning the tons of good conversation with Mark Conners who always seems to bring Kathy with him. Don’t be shy about asking her why she calls herself the Obi-Wan Kenobi of shopping. Everyone always wonders why Mark isn’t at more contests, perhaps the princess can answer that question.

Anyhow, I was interested in seeing what people’s thoughts were about engine selection for the PW Impact? I understand the Saito .72 vs .56 battle continues for Dan as well as the OS 40 VF being recommended by Paul. I can’t seem to locate the OS so I guess it comes down to the .56 or .72. Anyone have feelings either way?

Hmmm, pick your poison. I like the 56 more, but that's just me.

All different animals. If it were me I would get something that you feel comfortable. PA-51, and OS-40 VF are good ones. RO-65 set up that Paul is running now is super. PA-61, and ST-60 are good workhorses. Stocker, Merco all have potential. FOR the Four Strokers Can’t say but the 56 seems to be very good.
Glad you made it down to Salem. You bring class to every event.

If your are heading in the direction of 650sq-64oz class ships, go with the Saito 56. If you are heading in the direction of 750sq-75oz class ships, go with the Saito 72. The Saito 72 in my humble opinion is not for beginners. The Saito 56 can be handled by most stunt flyers, and if you can't handle a Saito 40, you better take up stamp collecting!!

Short of running down a 40VF--and they are available, even if a bit of bother to locate--I continue to think the Saito 56 is a real nice match to a per-plans Impact.

Back to the 40VF, there was mention here awhile back of the Canadian distributor for O.S. selling parts substantially cheaper than our U.S. importer. Randy noted that all 40VF parts were available from them and that the total came to around a mere $100.00. If this proves to be the case, I really think you would be happier with the 40VF...

One of the advantages here, and it is not of any small consequence, is that setup and trouble-shooting information is close by. In a worst-case situation, you could have shown up for Fall Follies with a "kit" motor and pipe, by Saturday afternoon been burning in pattern after pattern with very high-quality engine runs. Fact.

Methinks he may be correct.
I got two brand new in the bags sleeve/piston sets from an unnamed source for $30. NO they are not for sale.
OS 40 VFs are out there.

This morning, I saw Dave Gardner's new Rustler-Merco .61 Morph engine...like the .40. Very slick, light and compact. Dunno the price, but if you have to ask...... Steve

You can doubt me all you want, but I was referring to input from Randy, and I long ago learned to never doubt him.

I did quickly scan parts prices for 40VF stuff from Canadian distributor and what Randy said appeared to be true, although I'm not certain bearings were included in the roughly $100.00 total.

Yea, I thought it was odd. I just did a quick total in my head. Seemed like for around a hundred bucks you could build your own.

Just a note regarding Udisco. They do list a lot of parts for the VF40 and the prices are really good - but I contacted them regarding a sleeve and piston it was not available. Perhaps their listing is not 100% up to date.

I doubt I'd actually build one from parts. It's not like they aren't available.
