What's a good prop for a stock LA.46?

APC 12x4. I run an APC 13x4 with 15% nitro, 12% castor and 12% Klotz.

Or, for a heavier plane, an 11-5. Currell

What size wing areas are you guys powering with this engine?

How thick are the wings?

And what do you call a heavy plane for this size?

The plane that I'm running the 13x4 has around 560 inches. And at 62 oz. I think that most folks would agree that it qualifies as heavy.

BY&O 11-6. I've used this engine/prop combo. on Oriental (full fuse.) 40 oz.,
Cardinal profiles 45 oz. & 3 Tanagers 43 oz., 48 oz. & 54 oz.
All fly a nice pattern.

I got this engine after I read (here) the opinion that the LA .46 gave a good stunt run. Your selection of props suggests to me that this engine should be run like other modern engines, ie. low pitch, relatively high rpm so that it doesn't run away. I've got the TT .42 running pretty good now, but I had to go to an APC 11 x 3 before it settled down. I blocked the boost port and added an extra head gasket as well.
So,for the LA.46 I'm thinking, 11 x 6 BYO suggests a 4 2 4 break motor, while 12 x 4 sounds like a typical Sch. engine. So which is it??

My 4 OS LA. 46s all 4-2-4 break nicely . You may need an extra head gasket. For good engine runs right from the start, run the LAs for 2 hours on the bench. With a BY&O 11-6 prop, I launch at between 7800-8200 rpm . Depends on the temperature.
At Brodaks & Cleve. contest this year I saw a Magnum powered by a OS LA .46. Plenty of power.

Has anyone had any success with the Tornado three blade props on the 46 LA?

That's the beauty of this engine, IT WILL DO BOTH.

By the way 4-2 break does not require high pitch. Our motors are running a very conventional 4-2 break with 4 pitch props. If you plan to run a lot of pitch, better plan on some load to go with it...
