I took it for granted that IE was the problem. So what. I *still* can't read it.

I guess that it's time to dump IE... The only reason that it's still here is that I have so many files in my "Favorites" directory.

I already have a DSL line but next time I'm going for some REAL speed! (If I ever have to go back to a dial-up I'll just die!)

Any suggestions for a replacment for IE?

With all due respect, though, IE is not slow because this file is big. IE can load gargantuan files. The problem is that MS interlaced IE with the operating system. That succeeded in making IE the most prevalent browsers, but it also became the biggest target.

Typically, forum threads are full of mixed text, html, and a number of other character mixes that IE might mis-interpret. Because IE has been "hardened," it takes a lot longer to load the thread because it's suspecting potential viruses (or program execution commands). The same thing happens when your anti-virus software is running versus having it disabled - files may be copied and moved much faster without a real-time anti-virus running. IE's service packs and updates operate similarly.

There are other reasons, too - but there's no point in digressing too much. Another browser will offer temporary performance increases, but reduced compatibility as well. Initially, they may seem faster and virus proof, but that's misleading. I like Opera for its low impact on the operating system, and pop-ups go nowhere. Unfortunately, some features require pop-ups - like video and audio streaming. Plug-ins such as Flash, Adobe Acrobat, or Quicktime may not work. Eventually, if it gains any widespread use, it will also succumb to the virus terrorists.

I've got IE, opens up OK for me. Mind you, just about all the links on the page (i.e. the messages) are dead. I can imagine some spider grabbing all those little itty bitty text files - what a mess!
