I don't have any results. The weather on Sat. (old time and classic) was 85 or 90 degrees, nice day. The weather on Sun. (Pampa) was real windy and wet drizzly rain. They tried to get one round in for everyone and then shutdown. Many got blown out of the pattern by the strong winds. The smart ones let the wind take the plane out of the pattern. Those like me who fought the wind ended up in the ground. Mixed emotion thing, loved being there but hated the weather. I fly Intermediate so maybe someone else will post their perspective.

Hmmm...

The last time I saw Scott Urabe fly he was using a Saito 56 and the 500-point barrier was in no serious jeopardy of being broken.

Now he's gone to a 40VF, exceeded 500 points comfortably, seems to be flying to a level I personally thought was possible as judged by his personal competence at the handle, but negated by powerplant of the time.

Congratulations, Scott! And, remember, I *told you* something was wrong with your 56 way back at 2004 NW Regionals!

And what's the deal with Derek coming fourth in Advanced?! During contest mentioned above he was flying in Intermediate PA, now he's in the 490s at Clovis? Lordy, Lordy, 2005 Regionals will indeed be very interesting...

Well, the 40VF plane got whacked, so he was back to the Saito and the modified Trivial Pursuit. He did seem to pick up about 75 points on the three 40VF flights I saw him fly, so I guess finally seeing what it was supposed to be like stuck with him.

Ugly air probably didn't hurt anything. The 20FP just blasts through that. And ugly/evil it was. David and I both felt we were lucky just to not wreck our airplane, much less be 1-2. I got off slow (5.6) or I think I could have had him this time. My airplane is usually pretty solid in bad air, but I had pretty much no idea how or where it was going to go half the time. I thought I was headed towards 15th place, and he thought he had put in his first sub-500 score in a long time! I guess it looked better from the outside than it did from the inside.

Judging intermediate was quite an experience, too. John Wright and I were sitting in a lull, and it seemed pretty nice right there. But look 50 feet to the right and the trees were bent over one way, and 50 feet to the left, the trees were bent 45 degrees a different way. And it looked like it in the air. Cliff Denchfield won, and I would say that the air looked like it had been turned off temporarily for his Big Jim ST60/Patternmaster. He made some mistakes, of course, but they didn't seem to be air quality induced.

Oooops! Sorry to hear of loss of a Model by Urabe. I still think there was something wrong with his Saito 56, although it may have been as simple as wrong prop. At any rate, there is nothing quite like having experienced "proper" Stunt runs, and now Scott has...

Hmmm, actually Derek has gone off the res on us. He was flying with a 25FP, .250-bore venturi, O.S. NVA, O.S. #8 plug, Bru-line green, 20FP muffler w/cone, Bolly 9.5 x 4.5 pitched to 3.75, SIG 10% Champion with an extra 2% Klotz.

Tells me the speed regulation not quite up to standards of 20FP with you-know-who tune-up, but it surely does punch through nasty stuff, as I was so very surprised to find was the case with my Skyray/20FP combination.

Now that you mention it, it did sound that way a bit. I didn't watch Advanced official flying, but I did hear him practicing on Saturday, and it did seem to be winding up a bit in consecutive maneuvers. I thought it was just set too lean. Whatever, I guess it worked, and 12000 RPM and a 3 3/4" pitch do make for pretty good wind performance.

As if to prove that I know more about Derek's setup than any of the others on this site can stand, remember that he is using a Weird Tank and that it is mounted within built-up fuselage. He says the last time he checked he was launching the 25 at 13,600. Yowzer...!!

I don't have much to add here except to say that 13,600 was with an APC 9-4 and MACS muffler, about a year ago. I haven't tached it in it's current configuration. The engine ran steadily and produced plenty of thrust, the airframe had a "distinctive" resonance (not horribly loud, but everybody could tell when I was flying), there was manageable windup. Just about everything in my setup was "off the reservation", but given my options and the conditions, it worked pretty well.
I want to amplify Brett's comment on Peter's performance. Peter hadn't flown his plane (a Magnum .36/pipe BTW, and I was paying close attention, Dan) in 14 months. He spent Saturday diagnosing all sorts of vexing problems. Most people would have thrown in the towel. In your best British accent, say "brilliant"!

I will be happy to welcome Scott into the ranks of the Scum-Sucker Experts next year at the Regionals. We're getting to be quite a group.

It was a good contest, as usual. We left late, because Marilou didn't return from a trip to Japan until Friday morning. We got to the site Saturday afternoon barely in time to practice and take out tip weight. My one flight was in the rain Sunday, so it felt like home. It wasn't very turbulent. Then the wind came up from the southeast, the most adverse direction for that site. It was particularly hard on the Intermediate circle, which was just downwind of a big hump in the terrain. Our circle was a ways from the hump, but immediately downwind from some trees and a fence. I enjoyed seeing Phillip's airplane getting bounced around, but I'm glad it didn't get hurt. We had a nice trip down and back, using the GPS to seek out Starbucks and Indian restaurants. Next time I'll try to get there sooner. I missed too much socializing and taunting among the old combat flyers.

Some pictures:
Jim Aron's beautiful version of Brett's Infinity
Phillip's fine Diva, also an 18-pointer at this year's Nats
Another pretty airplane

I'm embarrassed to have forgotten. It's not a Wooley Cobra; it's made from a Sig kit. I think the paint job is cool.

This is a bad picture of the COBRA. The real color was a metalic grey. It was a beautiful paint job front row finish and excellent workmanship. It was a real show stopper. Powered by a ST 51.

That's Bill Ervin form Las Vegas. It's a Magnum reworked to look like a Cobra. I think Bill flew it to a 5th in Advanced at Clovis.

Crist,

Cool plane. Yea, looked black in the picture, but I can see now (I downloaded it and did some lightening) that it's dark grey.

Neat presentation. Anybody have more pictures?
