Hi all, I was doing a search on "Strega" the other
day and found a site that mentioned that the Strega
would be produced as an ARF next year. Can anyone
confirm this?

Thanks,

Tom

Tom - where did you see that?

I think it was a RCUniverse article.
The person stated they e-mailed Brodak.
Bob, I figured that you might have a
possible answer.

I think that we will see a Cardinal or Strega, as well as a Vector .40 from Brodak.... the initial release has been very well accepted, as are the Nobler and Flite Streak.

I really have only one major gripe on C/L ARF's and that is the F/G cowl. Yes it's nice and is something that I am quite used to on an R/C plane but it sure makes a mess of the usual flowing lines of a nice C/L model. Worse they are too large to flair into the body to make them less obvious without a major overhaul of the cowl.
The Strega and other full fuse planes are dimminished a little by these.
It is as I said only a personel peeve.

No harm in making your own cowl. DOC

Yup. You'd think that with the clamping engine mount system, a regular cowl would work ok, but maybe they couldn't see beyond NoblARF technology. Steve

Would this refer to a full sized, full fuse 60 ship Cardinal? (As opposed to the Profile Cardinal, as the current Brodak offering should always be referred to, of course).

Would the Strega be a full sized, full fuse Strega, or some new profile named Strega?

Chris:
The STREGA is already a laser cut full sized stunt plane available for Brodak...carrying the disc to operate a Chinese laser should be a piece of cake? The Vector 40 is not laser cut, but I believe that the plans are CAD?

Good so far, how about the full sized Cardinal?

If the current Brodak ARC/ARF's are any indicator, I'd think a bigger model would be doomed by the heavy balsa used. If the wood was selected here, then shipped to China, it could be improved. This is one area that Top Flite seems to have done better than Brodak, frankly. Steve

Steve, which Brodak ARF are you using as a reference?

>Steve, which Brodak ARF are you using as a reference?

The single sample OrientARC in my posession. The bare wing, straight out of the bag, no covering, no flaps, 274.5g or 9.55oz. The bare fuselage, straight out of the bag, 214g or 7.44oz. Seemed heavy to me. Also to PW. Makes the Magnum XLS .36 the obvious choice. Steve

All the parts for my Oriental weigh 29.1oz without engine or tank.

I guess that points to an all up of about 40oz dry. Is that OK?

Cheers, Geoff

Hi Steve. Bad Andy Patterson had his ARF profile Cardinal at the Huntersville meet and it came in at 42 oz ready to fly. Not bad as most kit built Profile Cardinals come out at 45+. My first came out at 40.8 or so, but the others came closer to 48 oz and still flew great. My only complaint about them is the colors and I personally hate monocote on a stunt plane.

Ty,

What colors are they?

I have always thought that Brodak boxes and subject prototype airplanes were very amateurish in scheme and color selection. Nothing like the bold look of a Veco Smoothie box scheme or simple elegance of Windy's full sized Cardinal scheme (originally candy apple red and white).

It doesn't seem like a contest model savvy person makes the final decision on the box art or paint schemes.

For what it's worth, I agree completely, tho there are a few exceptions. I hope Larry Cunningham's new Mo'Best will have one of his usual stunning paint schemes. You are very correct about the Veco lineup. Bob Palmer's models all had great graphics and color combinations. Looking at the pics of the original MARS, for instance, it is very much like current Expert class PA models. Same for some of Mackey's models, like the original LARK, and I must not forget the Flite Streak and MAN Peacemaker. I wish the magazines had been in color then. I've many times wondered what some of the colors were. Do you suppose somebody knew an artist that helped? A graphic artist's influence? The German and other European (R~C) kit makers obviously have graphic artists design the striking prototype artwork. I bet it sells a lot of kits.

I think I read here that the CardinARF comes in 3 basic schemes, and assume the same for the OrientARF. That's another reason I bought ARC's. My CardinARC came by FedEx today. It appears to be much better than my OrientARC, regarding weight. I'll post weight totals, hopefully tomorrow, after the Nextel Cup race. Steve

Actually my arf came in at 40 ozs even with the recommended tip weight of 1 oz. After flying and trimming the palne has lost weight, I am down to 1/4 oz tip weight. Also at the contest I did find 1 flaw and that was the leadout guide ply form. It snap in the middle while snugging down the guide. I made repairs at the feild with ca and 64th ply. Problem solved.. I do hope that the arfs continue grow and sale like crazy, it will only help our sport in the long run. And before anyone makes a comment about BOM rule, dont even bring it up. thanks, BAD ANDY

It is obvious, at least here in Dallas, that the only new blood being infused into the community is due exclusively to the new ARF's.

Just think, it was just a few years ago that I remember an almost overwhelming sentiment on this very board that ARF's in CLPA would never even happen, and that the industry had no interest in our part of the hobby. I guess we have all learned different.

I can't wait to get my Strega.

CardinARC weights: Fuselage w/fin/rudder 211.0g, Wing 279.5g, Flaps 71.0g, Stab and elev. 57.0g, wheel spats 57.0g, Hardware Pkg. 139.0g. Total 814.5g/28.33 oz.

OrientARC weights: Fuselage 213.0g, Wing 274.0g, Flaps 33.0g, Stab/Elev. 37.0g, Fin/Rudder 11.0g, Cowl 16.5g, Canopy 14.5g, Hardware package 128g, Total 728.5g/25.34oz.

By the way, the Brodak website says to put the CG 1.875" behind the LE on the Oriental, and 3.0" on the Cardinal. Suppose that's at the center, or tips? They also give specs on where to locate the engine relative to the firewall on the O.

FWIW, neither fuselage is what you'd call "light", the OrientARC wing is awful heavy, almost as much as the much bigger and thicker CardinARC wing. Everything else seems pretty good. Steve
