For the non-electronic types, the colors equate to number bands on a resistor:

B = black 0
B = brown 1
R = red 2
O = orange 3
Y = yellow 4
G = green 5
B = blue 6
V = violet 7
G = gray 8
W = white 9

G = gold 5%
S = silver 10%
N = none ~20% (no tolerance specified)

On a resistor, it is read from the side that has colors close to the end. First band = first number, second band = second number, third band = number of zeros to decimal point (gold=minus one, silver=minus two places). After a space there may be a gold or silver band to indicate tolerance for error. Near the other end there may be a quality indicator in the form of another band.

There you have resistors 101...I hope it's still current.

Here is another way to remember the resistor color codes. It's based on the way they were developed to begin with. The middle of the color sequence is based on the colors in a rainbow that we all learned in science as ROY G BIV (with the exception of Indigo which is left out because nobody has ever been able to tell the difference between Indigo and Blue or Violet). That takes care of 2 to 7. Then you tack on Black and Brown on the front as O and 1 and Gray and White on the end as 8 and 9. That puts the two extremes of color ( Black and White) at the two ends and their adulterated cousins ( brown and Gray )adjacent to them.

There are some resistors that have only 2 multiplier color bands and 2 tolerance color bands. These are fractional ohm value resistors.
Red, red, gold, gold is 2.2 ohms 5%. The 3rd multiplier color band is replaced with one of the tolerance color bands. Orange, Green, gold, gold is 3.5 ohms 5%.
