Dope observation

I had an interesting experience tonight. I was sanding the fuselage of a CardinalARC and stabbed my pinkie on a plywood point. Bled much more quickly and profusely than I realized.

Discovered a few drops on an elevator. After applying a BandAid, I dipped a paper towel in the thinner tub and tried to rub the bloodstains out/off. Got most of it, but it became obvious that I wasn't going to get it all. However, I then rubbed a finger across the "swabbed" area and it was like I had applied 5 coats of dope and sanded in-between. It was slick!

I tried the same technique (without the bloodstains) over some of the other solid/sheeted surfaces and the results were the same; really, really slick. Is this something new, or have y'all been "holding out" on us newbies ? ? ?

We have been holding out, especially the part about the first application of blood. I would be curious to know what happens when you do put dope on it, however. Try a panel with part having the thinner application before the dope and part not and then compare it after the clear dope is applied. I have a feeling that the dope is going to raise those little "fuzzies" again.

Actually this is a process former SAM president Tom McCoy uses for preping his models for covering. He applies a fairly heavy coat of dope to a small area at time and wipes it down with toilet paper (in one direction with the grain). I haven't tried it myself yet, but those who have tell me it saves tons of sanding time. He works primarily with silk, so the framework has to be smooth or you snag tne silk and spoil it.

Without some blood sacrificed, the plane will never fly just right. Also it helps to paint them a crimson color.

Has anyone noticed the major change in the way dope smells????Is it me, or has dope changed that much? Especially, Aero Gloss, what the hell is going on W/Aero Gloss..The Brodak dope even smells different, nothing like nitrate dope-(SIG) of yrs back.....Very weird thread right??I have not looked at the formula changes, but my nose tells me something is very different w/the dope around here..Any thoughts or reason to my senses, sensing something. David......

Yes, I guess your right--It is even difficult to buy a fender strat guitar with the classic 1950's nitrocellouse laquer finish anymore..Regulations have impacted quality. Did we really need them???I like to think of myself as caring about the environment. However, my thoughts and intuitive senses say "over-reaction" has occurred regarding this issue...David

That's why we can't drill our own oil, we have to be held hostage because of the environmental mad-dogs.
