Smoothie ARC

Well, here’s the Brodak ARC Smoothie, ready to fly. The Bro-Zam .48 with the MVVS aluminum pipe and Rev-Up 14-5 should be adequate power. Not sure of what fuel to use – possibly Powermaster 40% nitro, 10% oil.

I assume that "ARC": means Almost Ready to Cover. I hope those who fly this plane will opt for a paint/color scheme closer to one that Bob Palmer made famous.

The (covered and finished) ARF version comes in Bob Palmer's original scheme. I somehow doubt the purchasers of the ARCs are going to opt for the same trim scheme, given that it will make their finishing efforts look just like the ARFs coming out of the box...

Hello, William - The only thing I have on this is the actual prototype that I'm evaluating/developing. I've recently sent all the engineering changes to the manufacturer. The cost and delivery schedule should, in the near future, be available from Brodak .
They've done a fine job on the prototype and it should be a very nice OTS/Classic stunt plane. There will, of course, also be a covered (ARF) version available.
The plane will fly this weekend and I plan to publish a very brief report on my mailing list.

Why would you put a pipe on this design? It really looks out of place on the classic design.

Gosh - I thought it looked kind of cool. A tuned pipe is just a bigger muffler, and any classic design's looks are ruined by one of those anyway.

Sadly insufficient. A strong ST 60 with and APC 18-8 should fly it OK unless the wind is up.

Smoothie on a PIPE......what a waste. Should of put in a FP-20 works every time........

The "Bro-Zam 48" is a concoction of Mr. Zambelli. Brodak 40 case and a big piston/liner fit to it. Why? Because it's there.

Smoothie with a .48, 14in prop and a Pipe? Is this guy serious? That's just wrong. It's like Rosanne in spandex: some things that should not be in public view....I agree with Scotty on that the FP .40 would be perfect.

This guy is as serious as a heart attack. Bob was instrumental in the developement of the current ARF and ARC Brodak kits, and in my opinion has done a fine job.

I agree that he has done an excellent job so far. I have an ARF Oriental and Cardinal and I am pleased with them both. I was just making sure he didn't have a 'mental' slip...

Yes, it's a real Brodak ARC Smoothie, but, as some caught on, I was playing with the powerplant description.
The pipe is from an MVVS .40 R/C pylon engine, weighs a lot and is for top-end only. I would never put in on a stunt plane. I carved the little manifold from a piece of balsa and painted it silver!

First flight will be tomorrow (weather permitting) with a good old Brodak .40 and a 10-6 or thereabouts prop.

The plane is ready to go at 38 ounces. Allen Brickaus is sharing the work and there will be an article soon.

You mean that you were fibbing about th blower belt?

It was a supercharger belt. The blower doesn't have one.

I second that thought. I've had several versions of the Smoothie and loved them all. Am dying to see the results of the new ARC.

I for one think it's a great color scheme! Looks really cool and original. I might copy it one day...

Come on now, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I think Roseanne would look quite lovely in spandex. Well, at least better than she would look out of it.

As a baseline, you should know that Bob Palmer flew a Smoothie in the fall of 1951 with a Veco 29 set so rich it just barely kept running.
