Fancher Handle

Hi Folks

I am looking for a new handle to replace an old home made job that uses cables. I have searched and read posts regarding the Fancher handles and have a few questions.

What is the difference between the large and small handles?

I believe that they are both described as Precission Pro handles, how are the large and small versions labeled?

Is the selection based on the size of your hand?

Are any modifications necassary?

Where/how is the best way to aquire one of these?

Well, unless Len retails them for Ted, I'd just look up Ted (Fancher) in CA and give him a call. He's a nice guy and won't do you wrong.

I guess you could find a post here that he wrote and click on the email icon to get a email address. Find a PAMPA directory, that will have contact info. Shareen is his wife and the PAMPA treasurer, any contact info for her will work for him.

The smaller one is the size of an E-Z Just Hot Rock - 3" wide at the grip. I think the large is 3 1/2" at the grip. This is "in the raw" - it's a kit, so you shape it to make it fit.

The size is important. Part of the trick is to make sure your hand is a pretty tight fit. It's critical that you don't make it unnecessarily loose on your hand, or even make it overly comfortable. When in doubt, get the smaller one.

For reference, when I lay my hand out flat, and measure the total width across the knuckles, it's 3 5/8" across. My fingers will just barely fit. The small is the perfect size for me.

Since you put it together yourself, you can shape it how you want. Other than that, no modifications are necessary. Just glue it together, shape it - essentially, just round off the corners - and paint it. Might want to chamfer the holes in the line carriers, and put a little grease in the hole from time to time to minimize wear.

I have pretty small hands, too. So the small handle is perfect for me. I spent all of 45 minutes yesterday gluing one together, sanding it and putting a first coat of finishing epoxy on one. I didn't get a good finish on the first one I did (gets sticky when oily). So I'm putting the epoxy on this one and will likely paint it with Rustoleum. I was flying with the slanted style of handle and couldn't get enough motion on outsides. Crashed a lot as a result. My flying improved a bunch just by going to the Fancher handle.

I have sent e-mail to Carl and intend to make a purchase as soon as I here back. I have read that Ted includes very detailed instruction and theory with his kits. Any additional tips on forming the handle and finishing would be greatly appreciated.
