Deal too good to pass? Need Help

I’ve run across some OS 20FP motors (3) that I’m thinking about buying at least one of them.
All set up and used by an RC flyer. All have mufflers and good condition. All the threads that I have read about the 20 and 25FP’s really make me want to give one a try; Mainly for Profile use.

1) Can these motors pull around a 35 size plane stronger than a Fox 35 (my best point of ref.)?
2) Is a Sig Banshee too big?
3) What are typical run characteristics compared to a Fox 35 Stunt.
4) Do they run a 4-2-4 or wet 2?
5) Where can I get NVA and Venturi parts?

I’m thinking $30 - $35 bucks for these in RC dress is fair. Good deal? No? I just need a sanity check, some opinions and guidance.

Chris...I think that Dan knows something about these engines.
Buy 'em all....they are great power for smaller .35 planes, like the Flite Streak or Ringmaster.
Run them in a wet two cycle, search for a Brett comment...follow his directions, you'll enjoy them.

Thank you Peabody. That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I know this subject may be bordering on taboo and trust me, I'm not trying to stir anything up. That's why I asked the specific questions. It just sounds like they are good motors and I was on the fence about investing in an unknown for me.

And not too wet at that.

A Banshee isnt too much plane if it is within reason weight wise.

Wind the motor up--perhaps 11k on the ground. Stock all the way around including the muffler.

A number of people can provide venturi for these including our host, Leonard Neumann of course.

$35 for all three or, $35 each? Sight unseen or, can you see them run?

Why don't you just get a new OS LA .25? Used RC engines might be clapped out junk inside. I wonder why he has 3 of them, maybe the first 2 got punched out, maybe all 3 are used up.

I wouldn't buy them unless I had a source for piston, liner and conrod. You'll spend as much for overhaul as a new engine plus have a worn crankpin. Hey, but you might get lucky.

I will be looking at them tomorrow. I think they might have been used for R/C Combat. No idea what kind of abuse they took. I don’t think I’ll be able to run them. If I can I will. Probably just oil and flip. I will be asking why they are for sale. Also, allot of spare parts.

That's a decent price. The cheapest I have gotten one is $40. The NV and venturi are easily gotten from Tower, but let Leonard fix you up. Are they iron piston or ABN? My ABN runs a mite better than the iron one, but they have different mufflers-the #842 on the iron one and the #2030 on the ABN. Sometime I will swap the mufflers and see how they behave.

Hi Chris,

One way and the easiest at least for me is to stick a little magnet through
the exhaust port and if it sticks, it's the Iron piston.

It will have "OS Max FP" cast on the crankcase, on the intake side and the number 20 cast under the exhaust stack. It's easy to tell the iron and ABN versions apart. The iron one has a narrow vertical "bulge" running up the intake side of the case, with the OS Max FP lettering in a narrow vertical strip alongside the bulge. The ABN case is rather flat in this area and the lettering spreads all the way across the case. Another giveaway is that the older engine likely has the number 842 on the muffler. The newer engines came with the #2030 muffler. As I say, the mufflers are't identical and may account for the fact that the versions don't run exactly the same.

I picked em up today. All I can say is JACKPOT!

ABN, Great Compression, no external scars, 2030 mufflers . . . beautiful!
In addition to the three 20 FP's, got two 25 FX’s, one 15 FP, an old 30 Max-S, props, spinners, plugs, radial mounts, Glow Bee thrown in also. (another thread).

RC guy just wanted to get out of the sport. I wanted to hug him. . . . Merry Christmas!
