Using Photo Filtre

Hi all,

I'm posting a picture of Derek's plane I took at Huntersville last spring. Hopefully it will post O.K.? I downloaded a new photo editing program called Photo Filtre. If anyone has some tips on using this program please let me know!

Jim, the colors are blotchy which means you went to lower resolution color rather than simply compress the picture. Using a higher compression ratio is all that is needed and you won't degrade the picture one iota (that's Greek for those who never studied the language)on what you see on the computer screen.

Just a note on jpg images. Be extra careful when you reset the compression-on-save setting. Every time a jpg image is saved it will be compressed by that amount. If you set the compression at 25-50% it doesn't take many saves to severely degrade the picture. So before you change the compression, change the name of the picture. Then you won't accidentally overwrite your images with low resolution copies.

Unfortunately the JPG standard doesn't have a no compression option, so it is not a bad idea to save important files in another format like compressed TIFF for archiving. Takes more space, but it won't get ruined accidentally as easily.

I don't know for sure what you are doing. Sometimes when the forum gets very busy things slow down a bit. I am assuming that you checked JPEG if it was that and that you don't have a firewall setting blocking your uploading from your disk.

Otherwise, back up and try again.

Could you mail me the original. I finally came a cross a program that is supposed to be one of the best. I would like to give it a try and compare results.

How about listing the links to the freeware or shareware programs you are using, everybody? I've been trying to help Joe Just edit, resize and compress photos to fit SSW, but he's using Kodak software, and I'm not having any more luck than he is. I spent a couple of hours with it and gave up. Couldn't convert to jpeg, and couldn't resize, as I recall. I'd like to see Joe download a decent program, but don't know which shareware/freeware to recommend. I use MS Photo Editor, and like it a lot.

My method of "saving as", while avoiding overwriting the original, has changed slightly. I add a % at the start of the title, not at the end. By the time I'm done, it might be "%%%USA1_RandyP.jpg", for example. This has the benefit of lumping them all together at the top of the pile, in the file I put them in. Putting them into a special file on the desktop makes them easier to access during the rework process. What you call it is up to you. If it's a photo just for a single post to SSW, I might delete it. If I decide to keep it, I remove the %%%, maybe add some more info to the title, and put it into another file, where all related stuff goes. Steve

Just type in PhotoFitre into a search engine the web site will come up. It's a pretty good program for just about anything except layering.
