MDS 40 for 40 Bucks!

Chief Aircraft sells the MDS 40 R/C ball bearing engine with muffler for $40. Not sure yet about the performance, but where else can you buy a 40-sized engine with ball bearings for 40 bucks? Cheap motor that beginners might not worry about sticking in the ground!

The carb mount diameter is 0.550 inches so a ST 51 venturi and NVA would likely fit (if you're against wiring the carb wide open).

Not a bad looking mill but at 12.8 ounces without muffler it's a bit gravitationally challenged. Heard or read somewhere about a new 54 (doublestar maybe) that's supposed to be around 9 ounces without muffler but I doubt if you will be able to buy one for $40 though!

It's actually not that heavy for a double ball bearing 40. The muffler weighs 5.1 oz., which is HEAVY. However, engine without muffler weighs less than an OS 40 FX, SuperTigre GS 40, or a Magnum XLS 40.

Of course, a Fox 40 BB is the King, at 9.5 oz. w/o muffler.

Bushing engines, like an OS 40LA, will weigh about the same as the Fox.

It might not be a bad deal if you combine it with a tongue muffler. $40 is hard to ignore for that much engine. You'll pay more for a Cox Black Widow these days.

As a C/L motor it might work but as an RC motor it was just as villified as the LA series. They had carb problems and the rods went south on low oil fuel. Horizon Hobbies is no longer the importer of record for these motors so that might be why they are going cheap. Heck if your not competing and not building a world beater, buy the motor and have fun, work around the weight
