Thought this was another joke, but it's not. It's one of the strangest things I have ever encountered. Left brain, right brain trick. While sitting at your desk, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. * Your foot will change direction and there's nothing you can do about it.

Soo...I guess I need to stop standing on one leg while I do outside loops?

It is weird!

Kind of like playing eighth notes with one hand and triplets with the other.

I can't even lift my hand up before the foot changes direction!

Sorry Hoyt, That dosn't apply to me. I can do that all day. Also I'm completely ampidexterous and switch hands while I fly, Start model motors with my left hand fly with my right, Write with my right hand and throw a ball with my left.
Actually I'm writing this with my left hand while my right hand is making a figure 6 and my right foot is going in clockwise circles.
I'm used to multitasking.

Dennis,

But can you wash dishes and feed the baby at the same time? I'll bet you can. And I'll bet your wife don't know that.

You old fox, have you considered joining the circus, or maybe going to Hollywood? Grin.

Hoyt, I've always been blissfully single, so you have me on that one.
Hollywood if filled with a lot of strange narcistic people with bigger then life problems., kind of leaves me out of that.
I can or used to be able to fly 2 planes through loops and inverted flight and other unmentionable maneuvers but haven't been called on to do that in years.
But for those that don't know Hoyt, and I only met him 2x in the USAF, as a flyer/person he is larger then life. don't come any better then that.

Jim Walker could fly three models simultaniously, all with t#10 source

Thanks for the compliment Dennis. But are you sure you didn't get me mixed up with some other Stunt Pilot?

In 1950, 51, and 52 I had the good fortune to see Mr. Jim Walker, fly not two, but three of his Fireball designs with Bantam .19 engines on ignition, simultaneously. A handle in each hand and the third handled mounted on top of a football helmet. What a showman he was.
And I'll bet he didn't wait to be asked to perform his feat.

If you can still fly two at same time, you should let the younger generation see that. For posterity, don't wait to be asked, just do it.

well ... as a friend of mine in kansas likes ta say"first liar aint got a chance" .... ive seen jim do that with firebabys a few times but A C fireballs ... with batams on ignition hmmm ... before my time ... though i believe i did see him at th 52 nats ... like i said my memory is not that great ... didnt he produce th firebabys also? jim walker? ... very nice man ... remember th "Ureely"? ... for those who never heard of it ... it was his combo "all in one" handle, line and reel ... and one of th ways he demonstrated it was like this ... hed start th engine on a firebaby and then let it go and let th line out while it was flying round and round ... i think he had about 50' lines on it prolly .004 solids....i know they were real long for a 1/2 a ... hed do a few loops n lazy 8s maybe fly inverted a few laps ...then hed reel it back in before th engine quit ... firebabys actually flew fairly well for what they were ... u could do tricks with them ... he had this plastic clip that was held to th wing with rubber bands so he could put an xtra wing on to make a biplane out of it ... jim was fun to watch ... jim

Hoyt, I met you at the Far East meet in Japan in 1966. That meet was CD by Bob Dunham and Zel Ritchie. I know a lot of C/L people don't know Zel but he was the origionator of Space control Proportional rigs that cost over $600.00 in 1960 money, got bought out by Bob Dunham. He also did all the model work for the Movie PT109.
I Was on the USAF team in 1968 with you, Heck I actually got on by winning a few trophy's in free flight and placing in a few other events. My stuff was crap as I was down to my last month in the service, and most of my stuff had been relocated home.Going to the nats was icing on the cake. Got back and had 9 days till I was discharged. Remember I had that all black FAI job with the K&B15 that flew clockwise and slugger Brown took turns with me getting sick on it.

Dennis,

I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous!

My foot keeps going clockwise. However 50 years of drumming might have something to do with that. Independence excercises finally pay off.

This is truly weird! If done in the normal manner of writing a "6", your observation is correct.

More amazingly, I just asked my wife, Sharon (a lefty), to try this, and with the same results!

However, if you start at the "closure of the loop" (where the "6" usually ends) and form the "6" using a clockwise swirl, there is no problem for either of us!

this sounds a bit like an optical illusion, only with the muscles. Our brains are littered with wierd things like this. Rub your tummy and pat your head. Stand on one foot blindfolded. Some psychologist type probably can come up with a hundred different ones.

This summer the Nostalgia Diesel Combat guys had a fun fly type of day at Arlington Wa.and Mel Lynne won the free style event by flying combat against himself. (Two planes and apparently two brains) Supposedly even scored a kill) I wasnt there but it was well documented by Da Dirt I believe.Keith Varley.

Whoa! This is the way legends begin. I was there, and my recollection is that it was entertaining, it was a pretty good "match", but not even a cut was scored on himself.

Besides that, I'm pretty sure Dave Pellerin won freestyle by flying with his handle strapped to his foot, sitting in a lawn chair. He was going to juggle, but crashed before the juggling act started. Still, he did fly with his foot, and did juggle, all while sitting in a lawn chair. Judging was very subjective and some of the judges were seen to be showing signs of being entertained. Steve

Warhawk:

Now that we know the problem with the figure "6", how about finding a solution to the dreaded figure "9" ( also known as "did they add a stem to that maneuver?").

I tried it and could not do it, but try closing your eyes, and you will have no problems at all. Not to be tried while flying the pattern.
