Due to lousy weather have finally started framing up my second Brodak Legacy kit.
The first at 60 oz was marginally powered by a ST V case 51 and later well powered with a ST V case 60. Some tail weight was needed to balance and the ST 60 fuel consumption was marginal with the 6 oz hard tank.
My current power options are a Rustler/Merco 61 or a new model ST 51 G case CL version. Weight of the Merco is thought to be a little heavier than the ST V51/60 and fuel consumption is unknown but likely a little less than the ST V60. The new model ST 51 is about the same weight as the ST V case 60, 6 oz fuel quantity should be OK but a question remains as to power, especially in normal windy conditions. It is anticipated that finished weight will be around 60 oz.
Anyone have any thoughts?

My flying partner flew a a Sig Magnum with the newer Tigre 51. It weighed a bit over 60 ounces, but flew very well on the Tigre, and didn't seem to be short on power, at least as far as that plane was concerned. Plus I've seen hordes of Shark 45s flying on Tigre 51s.

Dale Barry was flying a Legacy sized plane on a Merco 61 alot this past year or so, but I don't know if it was the newer ABC or the old ringed one. Sure worked good whatever it was.

Whichever engine you choose, let us know how it turns out. Considering I have a Legacy kit, A tigre 51, and a Merco 61 ABC sitting around, I for one could use the information.

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but.....Our local Legacy flyer has a Saito 56 in his. Mike Pratt flew it at Sig this spring and pronounced it a fine stunt weapon. It just growls effortlessly through the pattern.

I copied this off Stuka Stunt Forum. I forgot who it belongs to but I remember they had just won Advanced at some contest. It is powered by a Saito 56. Looks like the nose might be shortened a little.....But I like it. OK the truth.....I love it!!!

I copied this off Stuka Stunt Forum. It belongs
to Keith Sandberg of the Piston Poppers. I remember he had just won Advanced at some contest. It is powered by a Saito 56. Looks like the nose might be shortened a little.....But I like it. OK the

Hi Jim,
I had a SV 11 (similar to the Legacy) that was 64 oz. It had absolutely no problems flying on the "new style" ST 51. Even flew it in some very bad winds at Norfolk, but it motored through. 5% Sig Champion, Rev Up 12-5. My ST 51 w/tongue muffler was a good bit lighter than the ST 60. (??)

Interesting and informative information here.
I know Larry Oakley's Magnum is well powered with a supposedly stock G51CL, even for our extremely poor conditions. Weight is unknown but suspect it is light due to extreme lightning measures and 100% $$kote finish.

The Legacy would likely be a little heavier and draggier.

I would really like to go with the ST G51. Still power is addictive as the man says so I will be starting crutch assembly shortly and will look at the mounting differences between the two with the idea of starting with the G51 and trying to figure what will be needed to switch to the Rustler/merco 61 if necessary.

Uuuh-Don't do 4 strokes. My casual observation is that for every guy happily flying 4 strokes there are 2 or 3 wannabe 4 stroke flyers sitting around the pits trying to get their engines running properly, figuring how to keep the prop on, not have overruns, or whatever other gremlins that plague 4 stroke guys. The reality I guess is that 4 strokes, pipes, etc. are just too newfangeled for me.

Jim. My own LEGACY (called LARCENY because of cosmetic mods) uses a T&L S.T. 51 ringed engine which is more than enough power at 58 oz. I use a Sullivan 6 oz clunk tank and it takes about 5 1/4 oz to complete the pattern. I run SIG 10-10-10 fuel, but Tom Lay recommends more oil.

Hi, Mr. Jim. Larry Oakley worked hard to get the weight of his Magnum down to 59 or 60 ozs. And the Tigre .51 is indeed stone stock. I hope this helps some. Dave.
