Scott,
I am one of those now interested in the Scientific/Musciano hollow-log airplanes. I have been gathering info, plans, and some lumber to make a couple. Also picked up a couple of Fox 049s... I would send you a copy of the plan, but I see that you are getting it already. Email me, offline, if you are interested in discussing these.

I've got a couple of BlackHawk Models on my workbench. Next couple of weeks the hard overtime will be over and I may actually get to start building again. I have the Army Racer model and one of the whip models. The hollow log thing is cute man, I hope to put it together nice and just let it set. Might have to get another one to fly.

William,
Yes, the Army Racer is cool looking. I actually have an interest in about 20 of the different models; they all look cool. Obviously, I am not going to make all of them. I have pretty much decided to make a Stuntmaster, and a couple of others---still thinking. But sometime, I DO want to make the P-38. There are about 3 or more folks who offer plans, cowls & canopies, and even kits of these various models. Currell, on this forum, has a nice supply of plans and decals for some of them. The guy who sells the fox 049s is very helpful with the engines. There is a guy named Jim Dobson who sells cowls and canopies. And for kits, Black Hawk models, and soon, DOC models will be selling some. Actually, DPC will be selling the Dauntless which is a slightly larger model with a builtup wing and fuselage; still very cool looking. I like the idea of the scientific/musciano contests and hope to promote that in my area--San Diego, CA

More hollow log fans - GREAT!!
Just decide what you want to do with the planes and build accordingly. So far, the Atomic, Golden Hawk and Bullet have proven to work best for stunt. But, you must build light - if it's over 5 ounces, performance will suffer. There are a number of good .049s available so take your choice. Wish I could find a 4-stroke .049!
I've already made my airplane choice for next year's Musciano event.

Bob,
Don't keep us in suspense. What is your project for next year?

My first is going to be the Stuntmaster, though I am curious, is the Super Stuntmaster still "legal" for the events, and is it better/worse or ???

I looked at the plans for this kit when it came in a month ago, do we remove any more material from the solid balsa plug that is the fuse or just run as is? Didn't say anything in the plans about it, at least I don't think it did.

I wonder about getting one of those FOX FAI .049's, would that be too much nose wieght? I can't find specs on the motor but found the link to Virgina model supply for them.

Hi, William - no, the Fx FAI will not be too much noseweight.BUT - we tested both and the non-FAI version actually performed better. Go figure. My gripe with the Fox is the continual loosening of the piston/rod ball-joint. Or worse, the occasional total rod failure. I have a number of Foxes but I hesitate to use them.
And, don't leave out the good old OK Cub - it really works.

Bob,

I really like your Bullet. I especially like the spinner you have on it. I have looked everywhere for nice spinners like that for 1/2 A planes. Can't seem to fine anything under 1-1/2" Dia. According to my plans for the Bullet, that spinner should be about 1-1/4" Dia. I would sure appreciate any information on where to get a spinner like that. Also, are the metal cowls avialable somewhere. Thanks for your help.

William,
You now know taht the FAI version is not Musciano "legal", but you can still get the regular Fox 049 version and it is legal. And they can run pretty fast; ask Currell. And the Cubs still can give it a go. And the point is NOT total let's go fast competition; the point is it's old-time, it's fun, it's COOL! I am looking at a McCoy 049 that I want to see how it will run, and I have a Fox, and I have a Cub, so I am good to....well, at least try them out...

Nick - should be interesting - I think I have some McCoy 049s. Never tried one but who knows - might be a viable alternative to the others.
Also, I think the McCoys have wrist pins.

I confess, Bob, that part of my enthusiasm comes from how cool they look. So the esthetic value is truly important to me. Now form should follow function, ideally, but form is important...at least with these. The little McCoy 049 duromatic glow/diesel is a really pretty engine with its redhead. All you have to do is to make sure that your red airplane paint is color coordinated with the engine...

I didn't realize the Fox engine had that same stinkin ball joint that Cox has, maybe a bunch of them do. Still, it wouldn't be like it was getting that much running time.

So, we gonna do a Walt M event or what? I need to call one of my local guys up, he's telling me that Walt has passed and I've read here that Walts still with us. I hate being goulish on the subject. \

OK Cubs huh? I'll have to ask Doc on what he prefers.

Well, Walt is the Hollow Log man. I am just trying to keep it going.

The Super Stuntmaster is not legal for the Hollow Log competition part of the contest, since it has a built up wing. However, fly it in the Unlimited segment. It should fly well.

The regular Stuntmaster, wood all the way and Hollow Log legal, flies pretty well. It is Walt's fave stunter of this genre.

I do have a limited number of decal choices left, for about two dozen or so Scientifics. My total number of decals is still about 500, but some of them are in large amts for relatively unpopular Scientific kits (I have run out of Zig Zags and ME-109s, for example, and have a zillion Red Flash and Piper Cub Trainer sheets). Also, some of the larger decal sheets sat on a shelf for many years with a bend in them (like the Super Stuntmaster), so these sheets have cracks. Sometimes, supplying two sheets solves the problem for decaling a single model. Or, if you apply the (cracked in spots) decals very carefully, you can get around this problem.

I sell the decals at $3 per sheet on ebay, but one year I gave them away at the NVCL meet (didn't give away that many, surprisingly). If you promise to come to the Meet, or if you are a NVCL member, and you only ask for a couple, I will give them out gratis if you send $1 for shipping.

Still looking for original Lucky Racer plans. Jim Dobson is having some CADed up, though. Will swap many decals/plans for any LR-related stuff.

More Hollow Log lore...

1. Zambelli (V12 here), Banjock and Richlen can make these planes stunt like you would not believe possible. And I am leaving out others that also do quite well.

2. McClain's Snark (the longest Log, by far) can fly 12 inches off the ground, lap after lap, without deviating more than an inch.

3. A bunch of guys, too numerous to mention, present museum quality Concours jobs each Sep. Some actually fly well, and some are tailheavy, at least early in the day.

4. I have a wacko idea for Unlimited next year. It involves Lindberg.

5. I will try very hard to be competitive in Speed. Hopefully, some improvements to the old trustworthy ME-109 fleet (a fourth one for the Winter build) will squeeze out a few more mph. Keep the prop on tight, though.

5. They are not legal for the Meet, but check out some of the old Enterprise Logs, too. Like the Fury bipe, and the Knight Twister. Workmanship in these kits is very high.

6. Before getting involved in Hollow Logdom, I thought 35 feet of line was too much for a Log with a (single lung) Babe Bee. But, with .008 braided, the length is just fine. Even in some wind.

William: As you may know, you can't use the FAI Fox in the regular Hollow Log competition. The standard, non FAI two Fox 1/2A versions are fine. None of these Foxes, although a bit heavier vs a Cox reed, are so weighty as to create a nose heavy problem.

You can hollow out the logs to your (wooden) heart's delight, whether scratch or kit building. However, watch where the wing attaches to the fuselage; don't carve too much out in this area. Wings may sparate if you do, upon Log "landings". Otherwise, if you can't read 4 pt agate type through the Log, you just ain't tryin'.

Competition....hmmmmmmmm.....competition...everyone spread all over the country...hmmmmm-- got it! Let's have a WAM speed postal event; kind of like the freeflight guys do. What is involved is everyone follows a set of rules but flies where they are and when they can, within some set period of time. All results are sent in by the close of the contest envelope, and the winner gets bragging rights until the next year. Or maybe....they win a NEW Musciano plan signed direct from Walt! I will pay for it, and see if I can get him to autograph the plan. In fact, if there is interest, I will volunteer to honcho this event. We can have kind of a running thread on SSW....uh-oh.... I just realized that speed would not be stunt and may not be "legal" for this forum. Leonard? Any opinion at this point? (I don't know if Leonard reads all threads, so I don't know if he will see this???)

On the other hand, maybe there isn't enough interest to do this anyway... Anyone?

Matter of fact, anyone wanting a catalog of Walt's Scientific Plans can send him a few dollars, please consider this, as he could cartainly use it!!!

So how much is a few dollars? I have two done and a third underway. My first flying kit was the Scientific "Two for One" of the Mustang and F86, profile trainers. Did Walt design these also. My all time favorite is the Little Mercury. It reminds me so much of the ag planes that were used in the valley to spray for aphids on the alfalfa.

Walt charges $5.00 per plan and that includes shipping. I am talking about his hollow log kits. The other kits prices vary from $5 to $10 to $15. Most of the others are in the $8 and $10 range. He will send you a multi-page listing of his kits. What is really nice is to have one or two of the Scientific full-page ads so you can see what they look like. I have one of those... Now, can I use my scanner...successfully? I confess that is a problem for me, though it lites up...

Glad to see all this interest in the logs. If you build one of these, see if you can get one of the 1/2A handles that was designed by Larry Renger. I picked up one of these for last years contest, and it is by far the best 1/2A handle I have used. Larry states to use a little less line spacing at the handle than you would normaly use. On my plane last year I used the least amount of spacing, and was surprised that I could do loops with great control. A very well thought out design, and light as a feather. Maybe Larry can tell us more about what makes this handle work so well, but it does make flying these little gems a whole lot eaiser.

The handle is available from Eric Rule at RSM. He also has a larger version that fits my fat hand better than the small one and is still light enough for 1/2A.
