Experience With NorVel 15's?

... either the Big Mig Sport 15 or the AME 15 (BB)? How is the Big Mig for stunt; how is the AME for FAI Combat?

I am pretty sure that F4F Guy (Ron Burn) has used the Norvels quite a bit in his flying class.

I have a Clown Racer with a Norvel 15 and its a hot flyer, and I have a ARF Flite Streak with a Norvel 25, another hot Motor , Its really too fast for stunt but for Combat its great. See Ya NEAL:D

AME's or Big Mig's?

I also have a Big Mig Norvel 15 in a Clown Racer. It runs great and its a screamer. It flies really quick, but its supposed to. Its ok for stunt, it will do everything. I use a 7x6 prop with the 15, you could slow it up with less pitch or a bigger prop.

I've run the BigMig Norvel 15 on a Ukie 15 foamie. With an MA 8-4 prop it hauls it around OK. I can set it with a fat 2C and will hold this setting most of the flight. When I've switched to the FP 15 on the same prop and fuel (5%) the performance does taper off. The FP starts easier though...

I should add the BM 15 is the older non-RevLite motor. I just latched onto a Revlite BigMig 15 and it starts easier but is not broken in yet. It also doesn't have the screen over the venturi the older version did but the older one had that funking coil spring wire clamp for the muffler.

I think mine are Big Mig's.

Mine say Big Mig or AME on the left mounting lug. Also, the AME has BB under the .15 on the crankcase.

As Bill said in his post,I've used about 50 Norvel .15s in our "Young Aviator's Academy". They are good ,basic .15s,easily the equivalent of any but the high end .15s out there. For stunt, I'd recommend an 8dx4p Master A.S. or equivalent. For cost reasons, we use 5/73/22(all syn.) fuel. You may get more performance with higher nitro,but you'll have to play with head spacing(in my opinion, not worth it). You DON"T need castor,you'll just varnish everything up. I can only speak to the "Big Mig",I have "0" experience with the AME.

I don't think anyone's addressed the FAI Combat question. As far as I know, no one uses the AME for F2D, simply because there are better engines available. For F2D use, you'd have to fit a 4mm venturi, make sure the muffler had a 8mm outlet. And change the needle valve to something that won't break in a crash. Note too that it has a 10mm shaft, the real F2D motors use 12mm. It may be a hot sport RC motor, but it wouldn't stand a chance against a Fora or even a Cyclon PC6 - and the Cyclon you can buy for $100, complete with mounts and propeller, which is barely more than you'd pay for the AME.

It does have F2D motors somewhere in its pedigree, though.
