CA and balsa

I was speaking with GSCB member Vinnie Oleske on Sunday and he and young Daniel were fondling a piece of wood that Dan was apparently going to use as a plug of some sort....Danny remarked that he did a "down and dirty" finish by dribbling thin CA on it and wiping it off.....not all that new, I suppose.
That got Vinnie going and he explained that he used thin CA to stiffen balsa that he was going to bore a hole into. He said that it prevented the drill from chewing the wood....I tried it and this is a tip that is easy and that works.

Well, for what it's worth, that tip has been around since the early 70's. Still viable.

Try placing a small self stick paper label on both side of the balsa, drill the hole then peel off the label.

Try running a hobby knife around the inside edge of a brass tube.
When the tube is sharp, drill the balsa with it. Make sure it's supported though. Use scrap, soft smooth timber or paper, never your finger. You can drill foam the same way, tip for fly tiers as well!
