Fox 35 with engraved 8 on exhaust

Got this engine off of e-bay. It's a 40th Anniversary case. It has socket screws (not unusual by itself), and a number "8" engraved on the side of the exhaust. The head also looks somewhat brushed and finished more than stock. Rather than take it apart and risk screwing up a professional alignment, I thought I'd ask you guys.

Is the "8" a symbol from a known rework artist?

ID mark from the user? I have known guys to ID identical motors so that they can track their performance.

That would be my guess also.

Any idea whose rework it might be?

No rework, just some guy keeping track of his engines. I did it to my first 3 original foxes. Then I got rid of them as I didn't have anywhere or anyone to fly CL with, or any real time. They were goofed up 40th anniversary specials from the period of improper heat treating and keepers that weren't made right and grooves that were too small. They spent more time at FOX than with me.

If the numbering is a previous owner's identification, it may or may not indicate the amount of rework (if any). I usually identify mine by a number either on a motor beam or on the backplate. That number is recorded on a 3" X 5" card that gives the details of the engine, such as "Bone stock" "for racing", Filled bypass, ground shaft 0.xxx inch etc. I usually do not sell my used engines, as by the time I get through with them, they are all used up, and they go in my junk barrel.
I know that one is not one of mine as the marking is on the exhaust, and I have never marked one there.
Good luck in finding out what all (if anythging) has been done to it.

A year ago someone TOOK two FOX ENGINES from my shop an #7. CAN you post a photo? I don't think it's mine but It would be fun to see.
I usually put the number on the stack and SR on the lugs AFTER rework.

OBTW.... They also got my Tom Lay McCoy 40 and a dozen 10x6 Super M Props. Nice guys. I know who took them. HOWEVER, they live in Southern Oregon...So I hope we never cross paths. This was about the same time Randy Smith posted a theft.

There is no "SR" on the lugs.
