In my search for a three-blade 10x4 prop I was directed to “GATOR PROPS” Owned by Traian Dorin Morosanu. I purchased a number of different sizes from 10-13” two and three bladed props. My goal was to find a NEW 10x4 Three –Blade that can take the place of the Torpedo 10x4.
I’m running an OS-32F on a RD-1 that weighs 40 oz. I have been flying the plane with different props such as APC, Clubman, Top Flight, Zinger, and Rev-up. And I wasn’t happy at all with the performance of any of those set-ups
When I received the Props from “DORIN” I was a little puzzled. The props were made all the same and cut to 10 to 13” So YOU have to do the finishing to the prop. All I did was true up the edges and balance. These props are light and have some flex. The hub is not too large and has a steep for the 1/4 to 5/32” shaft.
Checking the props on the pitch gage ALL were 4 pitch. NICE
I put one on the OS-32F went to the field did a test run to make sure that there was no overheating, checked RPM’S looked good ready to fly.
First flight…. WOW the plane finally was happy. Lap times were the same BUT the OVERHEADS were tight and true. I put up six flights in 10 mph winds and had a blast. SO? what if I added a little more pitch to the tips. Got out the hot water 190 degrees and added .2 to the tips. Went back out and NOW I’m a happy flyer. I put up 22 flights this past week with the RD-1 and I must tell you the PROP made this plane come into it’s self. I can’t wait to the other props on my PA-51, McCoy 35 and my ATWOOD 49. Dorin makes a quality product. Thank you.

Dennis,
One of the many great things about a PAMPA membership is that many manufactures advertise in Stunt News. Gator Props is an advertiser.

So I've been to GatorProps dot com and looked at the selection.

2,3 and 4 blade -- I'd like the three blade.

11 to 14 inch diameter in 1/4 in increments

Only two pitches, 3.75 and 4.0

I've got a Tom Lay ST .46 I want to put on a BARF Cardinal.

Who can tell me what diameter/pitch to order to start with?

It is a matter of rpm range you run and altitude and plane design. For a 40 size cardinal and LA 46 go to 3B 12.25x4. This diameter is conservative but you can cut it down if it loads the engine too much. Launch in the 9800-10000 and I think you will be very close. If you like to run your engine above 10000 range go to 3.75 pitch.
Good luck

I to wish to give Dorin a big pat on the back for his props. I have mixed emotions about even telling anyone I compete against they are so good. I am flying the 3 blade 13"x4 and it has changed how I think of 3 bladed props all together. Speed is down and line tension is up. No wind up and no lunging out of corners. The prop is a 14" dia. and needs only cutting down to what you need for engines 32 to 77. Windy has been testing the 14" dia. 3 and 4 blade on my RO-Jett 77 and has numerous people in the area sold on their quality and flying ability. Several people that could not find what they needed in other brands and types were amazed when putting one of Dorin's Gator props on their plane. In the quest for Stunt runs the props is 50% of the battle. I think Dorin has come close to selling the 50% solution. I am one of those guys that buys every prop that I can get my hands on and I also spend time flying them and can safley make these comments.

Yes, at 11.5" dia. 2 blade on muffler it is awesome. On the pipe it will turn 12"dia 3 blade. 11" dia 3 blade is good for the muffler. On my classic Falcon the larger props were too much resistance for good turning and cut them down some to help ease the square corners. When I get some more from Dorin I will retest by moving the CG and reducing flap. Goal is VSC and tests are not valid here as the air is much denser than Tucson. Right now in Houston air is 98% and in Tucson last year it was 80%. 18% is huge in power, lift and prop efficiency. Flaps will have to move back in, nitro up and more dia. and pitch. I will take a few different props to test when I get there.
When I first started talking with Dorin I needed a good prop for my 40. Bill Lee's 12-4 3 blade cut down was an excellent choice, but Bill was not wanting to make them in the Quantity that my customers needed. Dorin was just starting and in my discussions with him it sounded like he was going to make exactly what my engines needed. His mold is CNC made and modular so he can make 2,3,4 blade all from the same system.

Super responce. The 40 sized engines out there ONLY like a couple of props. I'll let you know how the Brodak 40 works with a 11.2x4. Wish I had a 40 vf set up to try the GATOR PROPS

Now to pass this on to the SuperTigre users out there.

I've got a Tom Lay prepared ST .46-G21.

I've not run an ST, but got a few because they are so reputed for their old fashioned stunt run etc.

Should I run in the lower range at 4 pitch or the faster ranger at the 3.75?

Any one with ST .46 experience can help me out here, since I don't know what the best practice is and Dorin is talking about an LA .46

Hi Cy,
FWIW,
I have never seen a ST 46 run with as little as 4" pitch. Personally have not run one under 5.5, so I don't know what to tell you. A Tigre 46 is a low reving 4-2 motor.

Wow, $50 for a prop, I'd cry if that got broke. The prop cost as much as the engine.

Quality costs I know I have at least 15 props that cost form $25.00 to $68.00 a piece.

Edit: Whats another $50.00 onto a $400.00 engine? Plus a $100.00 pipe and a $25.00 header. Its only money.

ST .46 launch rpm for Gator Props#18 source

Gator props only go to 4 in pitch. And there is the issue of number of blades.

Can you tell me what RPM you launch at for a good 2-4 break on the ST .46?

That will help me figure out which to try.

I'm beginning to get that you just buy a big prop and keep taking a little off of each tip until you get the rpm and 2/4 break to work out the way you want.

RE: ST .46 launch rpm for Gator Props#22 source
If you run on ground 9800 use 4 in pitch. These props are VERY EFICIENT it will feel like more than 4 in pitch. The best thing is get a 3B 12.5x4. Test it out and cut the diameter down till the engine load is right. Then add or take away some pitch to adjust for lap time. Windy uses these props and NEVER had to change the pitch to them. The runs them on the bomber RO JET 40 3B 12x4:-)

Hi everyone.
I flew my discuised Imitation today (Looks like a Chipmunk)
LA .46 and Macs Black (muffler) /Pipe. The Gator 12x4 3 blade only would do 9200 rpm with the Macs so I switched to the 11x4 Gator 3 blade 10,100 WOW what performance. This is the best set up I have ever had with this plane I may try a 12x 3/4 Gator 3 balde to get the rs up however for now it is cold 50% (For Calfornia) so it is making enough power. Thanks Dorin GREAT props. Walter Hicks

Just wondering out loud - I wonder if a 4 bladed prop where 2 blades were 12" and two blades were 14" would work..

Looks nifty - I suppose all the 2 bladed props come out of one of two molds, and the different diameters are had by trimming them down? Are the blades solid, or hollow like the big Mezjlik RC props? (As usual, I'm far more interested in the process of making them rather than in actually procuring any..)
