Hi Classic Lovers,

Whilst browsing the Ron Moulton Control Line Manual today I noticed the picture on page 72 of a rather sleek jet lined model by Sirotkin.
The caption states an unusual tricycle U/C layout and Merco 49 power My Manual was reprinted in '72 but it was revised in April '69. Assuming this pic was in the manual at that time ('69)(and I'm assured it is) then this would make a very nice, larger, classic legal design. Can any one out there help me with any more information, source of three view, plan etc? about this model.

Please note I'm not refering to his 'Spacehound' which is well known.

This looks to be taken from some of the YAK designs. Probably the 25-28 series. Some obvious modifications to make it a stunt plane, but the intent is there. Just type in Yak on the web. Hope this helps.

Gents,

There are several small 3-views of construction plans for this and a few other VERY different jet-style Russian stunters in Tom Morris' Classic Models Plan Book.

It is available from PAMPA sales, of course.

For any on the East side of the pond, take note: this book contains mainly USA designs...

(Still worth price and post...)

Hi Lou,
I was uncertain as to which design that was of Sirotkin's. I have the Illushyn plans, but that one is different. Will look back over Tom's book. I am sure Juri had a "name" for it.

Hi

Thanks for the response.

I have the Tom Morris book you refer to Lou but regretably it's not in there. His Spacehound features three times and also a couple of similar models by fellow russians - but not this one!

Dave Day tells me that the model was not flown at a World Champs because their team management felt it too big a model to handle.

He thinks there was a small three view published somewhere. Does anyone on the European continent who may be reading this have anything to comment on this design.

If I can find a three view I will draw it up.

Small three view drawings of that model were published in Aeromodeller back in the late 60's or 70's. I have it in my file, but I will not be home until mid-week. This came up once before here on the SSWF, but it has been several years. I do not know if you would be able to find it in the archives here or not, but I think you would have a hard time finding it, even if it was still in Leonard's file. If you can wait until mid-week, I will give you the Aeromodeller date. If you do not have access to Aeromodeller back issues, I can send you a copy of the drawing, but it will be a very small second generation copy.

Thank you Keith,
Your interest on this is appreciated. Though I no longer have my collection of Aeromodellers I do 'know a man who does'.

Confirmation of the date this appeared would be a big help.

I was mistaken in what I remembered I had in my files. I just got home after being away for the past 11 days. My earlier response to you was based on memory. Unfortunately, what I remembered were the small three view drawings published in Aeromodeller and reprinted in the Morris Classic Era Construction Drawings. These include the Plotsin monowheel main gear design in Apr 67 and the pair of jet-style stunters in Oct 67, the first of which has the landing gear entirely in small "jet-pods" slung beneath the wing immediately below the fuselage. The other has a mono wheel main gear with skids on the aft end of small dummy rockets.

I went through the material I have and could not find any further reference to Sirotkin's model pictured in Moulton's article. The only other similar ship I found was a photograph in an Aeromodeller issue published in 1968. The page I have does not have a month on it, but it was on page 430 which would put it in the Apr or May time frame. It is a photo of Jerzy Ostrowski holding his model that clearly shows tandem wheels located in "pivoted dummy tanks or missiles" slung beneath the fuselage. No drawing was provided.

I checked all of the Aeromodeller Annuals from the mid 60's to the early 70's and could not find anything more on the Sirotkin model in your photo.

Maybe Dave Day might have some leads on the Sirotkin design shown in the Moulton book. I cannot provide any more concrete information than you have regarding the date when that picture appeared. The Moulton article does an outstanding job in chronocling the evolustion of CL stunt design and seems to take the history up to around the mid 60's. It would be safe to assume that model appeared prior to 1970. Besides, I do not think Sirotkin was active in CL Aerobatics competition beyond the late 60's.

I apologize for not being greater help

Sorry, Tug,

I WAS thinking of the engine-pod U/C models by Plotsin, Jehorow and Klemenow in Morris' book.

Keith sounds like a good chance for you...

Hi everyone,
Thank you all for taking an interest. So far though no luck I'm afraid.

Thanks for your research Keith. I must admit I didn't hold much hope as I felt certain I would have remembered this in Aeromodeller. (I can honestly say that over the years I had read the print off them before finally parting with them). However it may have featured in other magazines particularly in Europe so I'm not giving up hope yet.

I have established that the photo was in the 1967 edition of the manual so this would make this Classic legal (for the '69 cut off - we have two dates over here the other being '63) but a three view is definitley needed to bring this design to life. Hopefully as yet some one may know of a source.

Regards to all and thanks again - Tug

While not by Sirotkin, this is the jet pod 3 view from Oct '67 Aero Modeler by Klemenow.
