Try downloading PhotoFiltre. It's a pretty good program and when you save your image just click on the Advanced tab and a sliding scale comes up and just set it slightly under 50KB and Wha-La you are done! Hit save and it saves it at that size...Nothing to it!

I downloaded the program and it is a keeper. Many thanks. However, when I save a file the dialog box (picture attached to this post)that comes up does not have any "Advanced tab" that you mentioned. Any hints on what I might be doing wrong?

The short answer is that I'm a Mac weenie and don't have any experience with Windows software.
The long answer is that, for purposes of cropping, resizing, modest touch up and exporting to web jpeg format (which is all you need to do for this forum), you want an application that is:
A) Simple to use
B) Has basic image enhancement tools (Crop, blur, contrast, brightness)
C) Has a jpeg encoder with a slider so you can preview the result before you save it.
D) Is a stable professional program.
E) Is something others you know use.
Judging from the description on the page, I'd guess that Serif PhotoPlus 5.5 fits the bill. It emphasizes the Export Optimizer which lets you see what you are about to do and know how big the resulting file will be.
PhotoPlus 5.5 is in fact an older version of a published and supported tool which is ideal.

My guess it's ideal for what Windows driving forum members might need to do.
This whole subject was discussed in some detail in a thread that resulted in the info above.
We keep getting asked the same questions over and over and the same answers keep lying around in the archives--unsearched.
Which is an argument for warehousing 'the best of' posts like Al Rabe's recent presentation on his rudder implementation in a read only Conference where folks could just find what they wanted.
Or get people in the habit of actually doing a search instead of asking for information they "know" is in the archives but don't want to search for.

PhotoFiltre does all of that and more and also is really-really FREE, whereas Photo-Plus pushes some other products off on you that are not FREE.
