dress shop covering material ??

some time back i started using sig coverall istead of silk and found the results quite pleasing since this appears to be polyester is there a type of material like this in a material shop i was hoping so so as to try some colored types back in the 60's you coud buy a lot of crazy color patterns of cloth that with a lot of luck would shrink down tight any one out there got any ideas?? thanx smitty;)

Hmm, I once covered a plane with material store purchased 100% Rayon. This was with dope, not an iron, but it worked well. It was a lining material and was really quite light.

Just go to the local fabric store and ask for 100% polyester material. It does come in different weights or thickness. Also there is a wide variety of colors. Have finished my "Thirteen" with a reddish purple color of some sort that the wife liked. Later, -DOC

heya guys thanx for the info--minnesota modeler that looks good of course it looks like a time warp of the 60's how much do you pay for silk shirts? my friend once covered one in high school with a girls silk slip that he liberated on a daring raid to the girls gym locker room!!!!!! that is what this hobby is about -trying different things i already drive the craft store crazy looking for fly tying materials thanx smitty:P

The stuff to ask for at the local fabric store (?) is "Nylon Chiffon". It's a bit heavier than the usual silk and takes a goodly amount of clear to fill but it is certainly strong - a really bad crash will leave you with a mostly intact nylon bag full of balsa bits. It usually comes in solid pastel colors but will sometimes come with intresting printed patterns - I once had several yards of the stuff printed with pink scotty dogs, but my favorite was the red and blue polka dot stuff. . . . .

Yes Nylon Chiffon, thsts the stuff I covered my combat models back when the Oliver was king (the 60's) I remember that it was important to give the nylon several coats of thin dope - at least 50/50 - as, if you use full strength dope, it runs through the weave and pools on the inside. The thin dope almost fills the weave and any that runs through dries without leaving blobby areas.

One of my best models was covered with a nylon that had very tasteful rosebuds printed on it!

We used drape lining polyester. It is fairly light and didn't take a lot of dope to fill. It, like all polyester has one good feature in that it can be heat shrunk about 10% if you don't get it pulled out completely to your satisfaction.

The shirt was a throwaway...don't guess I'd buy 'em new just for covering planes. I wasn't even sure it would work, but it came out really nice and very tough. Yup, no doubt a '60's relic.
