Bill Netzband left the area before I got into competition steady. So I do not know how he got the nick name. I fellow I know in California says they used to run when they saw him coming. I finally got to meet him at VSC several years ago. I thought he was a pretty neat gentleman. Especially this past year when he was helping me with the "Gold Brick". But, you know all the guys I have met in modeldom have been gentlemen. I don't want to meet the one I see in the mirror when I use it. Later, -DOC:-)

OK, gang, the truth about the moniker. Sorry that it is so mundane, but that's how the cracker crumbled.

When I started writing the CL Capers column in American Modeler (et al) the editor, Al Lewis decided to lay monikers on his three new columnists. Battling Bob running the FF column, WildBill running the CL column, and Howard McEntee was mature enough to avoid the treatment. I don't think many folks believed I was (WILD): maybe a few combat opponets.

I sort of wish it could have been juicier, BUT ............

Some of the stuff you wrote about was "wild". I found a column in a 1964 AAM written by "Wild Bill". About what year did you get that "Lofty Title"?

At least "Wild Bill" is easier to imagine then say "Dirty Dan". Sorry Dan but, you may not remember me from when the Nats was in Tri Cities and I can't remember where it was when stuff was being passed out of the motel room window so you could load it. Happy holidays to all, - DOC:)

Actually, WildBill came on board during 19-ought-60ish. That's when the AAM etc column was started. AND as is now obvious, it stuck. I decided to take advantage of the license around mid 1990, when the AM and A offered to sell any combination of alpha and numeric characters for $25 bucks. It didn't last long, and I suspect they found out a lot of data base programs couldn't handle alpha!

So far no one has asked me to change, so I haven't.

There's a flier in Chicago (can't recall the name offhand) who goes by "Mild Bill".

I particually agree with Wild Bill's suggestion the June 1962 American Modeler.

"Everybody gets warped wings,,,, straighten 'em with steam and hot water".

Infinately cheaper and more realistic that building on precesion surface plates with laser theodelities.

That would be Bill Dahlgren, the editor of the Chicaoland Circle Cutters Club newsletter. Besides being a fine gentleman he is also known for (1) having flown a 5 foot long Oscar Meyer "Hot Dog" control line airplane during the 7th inning stretch at Wrigley Field and (2) for designing a self-propelled lawn mover with a windup pivot drum that automatically cuts the club's flying field grass circles.
