Now Comes the Part I Hate!!

Well, my long awaited (for me) Sabre Stunt is now in silver and the part I hate is here, masking and detailing.

That is looking great.Very nice and almost ready for Christmas!

What a beautiful F-86D, my sincere congradualtions!!!

While serving in the USAF, 19th BW, SAC, we went TDY to Sidi Slimane AFB, French Morocco, North Africa in early 1957, they had a TAC
Sq. of F-86Ds there, hence my liking the "D" model, while I was there this TAC Sq. traded out for F-100s, Bob Hoover who then working for North American, came over a did demo flights with the new F-100s, quite an air show!!!

Looks great! That kit has always been a favorite of mine.

I built one when I was learning to fly but it survived only a couple of flights. Here are the only before (behind my head in 1973) and after pictures I have of mine.

I always wanted to build one of those when I was a much younger person. I'd look at the Jetco add and that Sabre just looked soooooo cool.
No one ever bought one, no one ever said wheather they were good or bad, it was as if the plane didn't exist. Went to a fair amount of contests and never saw one entered in any of the meets. So who bought enough of them to keep the kit in production for so many years.
At any rate years later I heard that it wasn't the best stunter on the planet but I did get a set of plans from out host and look at them and still get that irresistable urge to own a Sabre if nothing else to satisfy that urge of a much younger me.
Lets have a picture of the finished product and more importantly that all important flight report.
Did I mention that yours looks soooooo cool.

Thanks all, I'm working on the insignia now and making up the lettering. I really get antsy at this point because the plane is essentially finished but needs all the pretties to make it look finished. That's why I don't fly scale, the little details drive me nuts.

Dennis, your story sounds like mine. I had a freind in high school that built one and did it up in Navy colors. We flew allot together but he always flew his 1/2 A stuff. When ever I'd try to get him to fly the Sabre he'd say he was saving it until he was really good. I never saw it fly and we lost contact shortly after graduation. I've never seen another one until I built mine though a couple have shown up in the mags. I've heard comments on both the + and - sides. Its got a really thin airfoil and its short coupled. I really don't care much how it flys, it the fulfills an old dream.

Mark Hughes competed at the 92 VSC with a Fox 35 powered Sabre Stunt. He was flying it fast and open, it should also be noted that his flights were the first dozen full AMA patterns he had ever completed. (Two years later he was third at VSC with his replica of Jerry McMillin's AMA-68 Shark).
The model will fly well, as long as you respect the thin wing. What does it weigh? It doesn't matter, it is going to fly fast.

The apron was required by my mom whenever I used epoxolite. Too many ruined pants. Money for haircuts was diverted to modeling supplies.

Here's the finished Akrobat on the left with some other Sig kits built by my flying friends. The Akrobat kit had just come out and I won it at a contest (The Sig folks were very generous with us kids). Mine didn't last long and met the same fate as my Sabre Stunt.

To look that great in silver, the surface finish has to be perfect. It's beautiful. You are quite a craftsman.

Randy, I'm sure the name has something to do with it, we should form a society. Of course the "Randy Society" would probably make our British freinds leary of us ever being around their wives and daughters.

Wow, this Sabre looks like it could be one of those new "plastic" ARFs.

Actually it blows me away just in plain silver. I can hardly wait to see the finished model. Randy you must have been watching some of Windy's tapes.

Silver is the basic color but allot of military markings and trim to go on.

Its Brodak and just says silver, its what I use under the candy colors.

I got a P-51 and a Lampione F-86 that will be needing silver. I like the stuff you are using. So far I have not used the Brodak dope line, still have too much Acrylic lacquer and Sig.
I KNOW how hard it is to get silver that perfect looking!

There have been a number of comments on the condition of the substrate in order to make silver look consistant. I'd like to mention here that this model is covered with silkspan, 3 coats of Brodak clear and 2 coats of the Duplicolor Scratch Filler primer I've been using for several years now and mentioned here on numerous occasions. Its light, fills rapidly and sands easily. Using this stuff I've produced better finishes then ever before in much less time and effort. Try it you'll like it!
