Hi all,
I have three engine choices for an Umland Shark 15 kit. (yeah it's a kit, and a real nice one)
Choices: Fox 15 steel fin, slant plug Fox 15, and a couple K&B GH 19s. One of the K&Bs is new.
I also have a Max 10S.
Can't get any more small engines, so I'll have to use one of these. Mufflers are not in the equation.
Suggestions?
Thanks

Mr. Bill....I would send the Foxes along to Brett for the dreaded "hurl".........

Are you going to try to fly this critter in Classic? Or just sport fly with it?....

If you want to compete with it, send only one Fox to Brett....he accepts proxy entries, I'm told, and screw the other one to the plane.

See Ya

The K&B 19 is too much motor for the plane. I personally don't care at all for the steel fin Fox no matter how in love GMA was with it.Now the slant plug is a good one with an 8/4 and appropriate fuel. I use 15/29 and 2 head gaskets. Fox made a head spacer that was a huge gasket. Never could figure out why since once installed you had absolutely no compression at all.Worse I have a pile of them.
So my vote is for the Slant plug on 55 foot of .012 which is what I use on mine.

I also have one about half-built. I'm using a 15LA - in the premise that the LA is much weaker than the FP, which I know is too much. Backup plan is a STG20/15.

I would point out that Larry "Joey Junior" Fernandez is the moving force behind the world-famous Foc 15 hurl.

Bill,

My vote would be the 15X (slant plug). Remove the decompression spacer it comes with, if someone hasn't already, and replace with with a .010 gasket. I like them with 15% nitro and 25% oil. This engine is very light for its output.

Tight lines,

Is there another perfect combination other than a Fox 35 and a Nobler?

Yes - a Shark 15 and a Fox 15X. I vote for the 8-4 prop, too. Sounds like Tom has a good recommendation on fuel. I flew mine (had several) on either Fox SuperFuel or Duke's, but that was w/o muffler. I also tried a Veco 19BB, and it was way too much engine.

I haven't seen the Umland version, but I doubt seriously that he added weight.

Ok guys,
Seems the Fox 15X gets the starting position! (got a couple that run good)

One other question..... with the trend towards bigger, stronger engines, why would the old K&B 19 be too much? Just curious.

Thanks!

I scratchbuilt a Shark 15 with a TD 09, 55 ft 012 lines, 10% nitro Sig Champion fuel, Cox 7 x 3.5 prop. An absolute treat to fly, I finally pilot errored it one time too many. I am in the process of installing the flaps on a Walter Umland kit (kit highly recommended) for the same TD 09 combination. I think you need a TD 09. Seriously, I would consider your OS10 first, then the slantplug Fox.

It'll probably work fine. I never had a K&B 19, but the Veco 19 BB is a pretty hot engine (as old engines go). Mine needed tail weight with it, and then it was a rocket. Later on, I found out my Fox 15 was that way with the Magician 15 - there's a good plane for an 09, IMHO. As you say, though, there are different trends these days.

EDIT to Jim T.: TD's were always above the curve. A TD 09 might run like a Fox 15X, anyway.

I've compared the engine reviews for the TD 09 and Fox 15X in Aeromodeller. Yes they are comparable. I don't recall the exact figures, but it is not too far off to say that a TD 09 will turn an 8 x 4 (not a good prop for a TD 09) within 500 RPM of a Fox 15X. The thing that impresses me is how well a TD 09 runs on 10% nitro. I have a couple of partially built Magician 15 kits a friend gave me. I am thinking I may try a Medallion 09 on one.

Bill,

The three Shark 15's I've built (stock Jetco kits-two with operable flaps, one with flaps fixed) were all flown with the Fox .15x. That's the way I would go today if I already had the engine. In fact the next one I build will start with a the .15x and maybe later I'll try a .15 SF on it. The mounting dimensions are the same, so why not? I flew mine set up thus: TF wood 8×5, SIG 5%/25% (all Castor), .012"×52' (eyelet to eyelet) lines. I know, I know! I used the wrong fuel and the wrong prop, but the fellows who saw them fly here were impressed that a .15 sized kit would fly well. It all worked for me. Your results may differ.

Either the Steel Fin or (monoblock) 15X Fox are fine. On paper, the 15X is better, but if you have a trustworthy Steel Fin, use it. Don't be stingy on the nitro, either. They loose heat quickly, and like to stay warm.

Bill, you may not have these motors at present, but late 60s era/early 70s OS Max Steel Fin .15 II and .15 III engines are really nice. Same for Enyas of the period. The little K & B Greenhead is a candidate, too. They can be picked up at swaps in the $20-30 range, and perhaps $10 more on ebay.

Agree that the OS 15 FP would be too much. Also, I have FP .10s, but haven't put them on anything yet. Maybe...

By the way, what is the porting difference between the FP and LA .15 OS?

A OS Max III was what was on the original, as I recall.

No boost port.
