I can't make that claim, but I do agree that Pearl Harbor should never be forgotten - neither should we forget what we had to do to keep it from happening again. I'm afraid we did forget - a little - in the 90's.

I hope we have the same result this time around: that we remember 9/11, and that we remember that we did what was necessary this time, too.

It's too bad airplanes were involved in both.

Let's all never forget the sacrifices that were made to allow us to do what we do today.

12th of July 1941? What happened?
Maybe the first step for world peace would be for Western 'Civilisation' to agree a way to write the date.

Dave!

You've been contaminated by the European date-order disease!

I realize you guys were a bit engaged otherwise, after 2 yrs, 3 months of Herr H.'s impolitenesses, but December 7, 1941 made an impression on us much as September ??, 1939 at the Polish Frontier did upon you and yours.

But, then, you assuredly knew that...

Great site, Dave! Keep it up, please?

I understand!! In the military we use year, month, day except for DTG on messages. To me European time is military time, ie, 24 clock, since we never close. I was just over a year old then, but I do remember VE and VJ days. Lots of horn blowing by Mrs. Peterson. Never did figure out why she was so happy, her husband was too old and was home the entire war!! Of course he was the local "OK Rubber Welder" franchise and I guess now he could make new tires or rather retread them when that was done. She had a pale yellow convertable and her two daughters were sitting on the front fenders, one hanging onto the spare tire that was in the left front fender. Remember those cars? I think it was a Plymouth or Dodge.

December 7th, 1941, a day that will always live in infamy.

September 11, 2001. The day the Muslims proved that the Japanese, Communists, Nazis, and Viet Cong were not so bad after all.

While brutally violent, the Pearl Harbor attack was, in fact, legitimate counterforce warfare. The demonstration of two baby nukes was fair payback.

The Terrorist attack of 9-11 requires at least ten times the payback.

So if a muslim shows up at the flying field with a Ringmaster and a McCoy and asks when the circle will be free, you will shoot him first and ask questions later, right?

Well, you could take issue with a couple of lumped categories in his statement: "... Muslims, Japanese, Communists ...". If he had correctly stated, "Extremist Muslim Terrorists," then it might've been slightly more accurate. He did say "Terrorist" later on, and I prefer to give him the benefit of the doubt in describing our enemies.

If anyone showed up at the flying field needing help, I think we would all respond appropriately, then ask questions later.

If we're going to pull out the PC police, it could be a long thread.

You know Cy, after you've been to the chapel at Ft Meyer, at the memorial service to a friend and classmate, a service where the only thing they recovered out of the Pentagon is your friends class ring, still mashed and melted from the forces it endured, a service where your friends four year old daughter asks the Secretary of the Navy, as tears stream down his face, when her Daddy is coming home, when you go to something like that Cy, then hell yes I'd be seriously inclined to shoot the bastard. I don't care if you think I'm misguided or just a racist pig, I really don't care. All I care about is that we keep killing that scum over there instead of having to kill them over here.-And that we get some payback for Lt Cmndr Dave Williams, VMI class of 1991, and all the rest of the people who bought it 11 Sept.

Actually, the English, French, Spanish, Italians, Germans, Russians, Chinese, and Japanese have all been both friends and enemies of America from time to time.

In peace time we fly model airplanes with 'em. In war time, we nuke 'em ( I hope ).

In 1971 and 1972, I did, in fact, fly model airplanes with Muslims (Iranian student pilots at Reese AFB). They were good friends then. Hopefully we will be friends again some day.

At the moment, there's a WAR going on.

The "war" is the third world war, it is global, it is against no country or government, but against the worst type of enemy, the fanatic that rides on the coat tails of ligitimate religion.

Many, many fools have made the prediction of what the Americans will do or not do in certain acts. Such as the USS Panay, USS Kearney, USS Reuben James, USS Cole, Kobar Towers, the barracks in Lebanon, other acts in various night clubs in Germany, sinking of the Lusitania, etc. Well, these acts made us mad, but we kept our temper. Then when a really treacherous act happens, such at Pearl and the Twin Towers, we as a united nation get really pissed off and total revenge is our only goal. The reason we didn't drop more A bombs on Japan is the fact that none were readily available, but a third was on its way.
The only thing predictable about Americans in a given situation is that we are totally Unpredictable, and that makes us dangerous, many fools have realized this too late.

For those opposed:
Yes, there IS a "WAR" going on.
If we try to "stick our head in the sand" hoping it will go away, the posterior region left exposed could quite easily get a bullet up it.
We became the World's leader through a determined resolve to do the right thing.

I feel there are many young men who gave their lives for us in places like Iwo Jima, Normandy, and on and on to the present day, flipping in there final resting places since the late '60s- early '70s because of the actions of Americans for whom they gave the ultimate sacrifce. Unfortunately, to some, the same country they died for guarantees us the freedom to act out in the manner some do.
To an old hillbilly American who has "grown up" in the era, I find it disgusting.

I have to stand up and be counted. Be assured, we all have extremist fundamentalists of our own nationalities in all our midsts. I await the day when the people ama21835 alludes to will be correctly described as "terrorists claimimg to be Muslim" as a matter of course.
Before 11/9 my wife and I had decided we would always travel together. When 11/9 happened we determined we would not be intimidated, and would lead our lives as if nothing had happened. One result of this was that we broke our rule and I flew without her to VSC '02, just to show our determination.

Back in the early 80's I was a letter carrier with the USPS. Part of my route was a trailer court on the DC beltway at US route 1. There were 2 guys living there about 100 yards apart. Both were in the service and at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. They didn't even know each other until I found out about their experiences and introduced them.

I thought it rather rare to find 2 Veterans like that, especially Pearl Harbor Vets.

Watched one of the many documentaries on Pearl and yes there are a couple of folks that never will be friendly to the Japanese, but there were the majority that realized it was a war and even a couple that agreed that when you go to war he who gets there firstist with the mostist wins the battle.

Terrorism is where civiilains are attacked on purpose, not collateral damage. I realize that the majority of the Muslim people in the world do not condone such actions, however I would feel a whole bunch better if they would be on the tv every day and in the battlefield every day looking to kill this scum that is making their lives more dangerous. If AlJazera would spend all of it's broadcast day putting up pictures of these jerkweeds like the 'America's Most Wanted' TV show instead of telling folks how more innocent people were killed because of Americas war of agression. I could be more supportive of the vast blanket of religion. This support would have to come from all the mulla's though as if the average guy did it then only one crazy religious man could put a death threat on their head, so maybe that's why they are so quite.

For a nice change, you might look at the Phil Hendrie website for a couple pictures just too startling for ABC, NBC or CBS and many of the nations newspaper to show. It's his scrapbook photo of the week on the frontpage at http://www.philhendrieshow.com/ and shows a group of schoolkids over in Iraq giving the big thumbs up and one child with a 'Thank you Mr. Bush' sign sticking out of the window. Children that now have running water, electricity and schools to go to. Oh I know all the Bathist folks had these luxuries before, but now just the average Iraqi does. You won't get that out of the Network news. Too much of an agenda out there for that.

Freedom isn't Free. Thank all of you in the Volunteer Service who are doing so much to give us our freedom and security. Thanks to all who have given before. Thanks to all of you who will give in the future.

Cy,

It's funny you don't pick pictures of the beheadings, but I guess that's not surprising, either.

If we weren't concerned with collateral injuries, we would've nuked the whole place by now. At the very least, some Arc Light missions would be used.

American soldiers are dying every day because we're trying to preserve Iraqi life and property.

Any injured human being is cause for sympathy and regret, such as our soldiers at Walter Reed, but the implication of your post is unsupportive of our troops and our country.

Cherry Hill Trailer Park was/is located in College Park, MD, that would be on the North side of the Beltway around DC. Some wonderful folks ran that place, and there were many wonderful and humble people living there. I loved that part of my mail route dearly. The folks that owned it passed on a pair of their season tickets to the Washington Capitals hockey team, to me each Holiday Season.

As the old saying goes, “I feel your pain”. But if we don’t recognize that we’re not fighting all Muslims, just Extremist Militants, our war will quickly become “We’ve met the enemy and it is us”.

I have many Muslim friends in the Minneapolis area, having managed an interpreting business with the Somali (Muslim) refugee community there for several months. It was an incredibly interesting learning experience. Had it paid anything near a living wage, I might still be there.

Let me tell you about an event that is a matter of public record – the Somali community sponsored a cabaret in the Hennepin Arts Center in downtown Minneapolis. Militant extremists tried to break it up and the Minneapolis Police arrested several when they became violent.

Subsequently the Somali community turned over to the Police a list of names of individuals they described as “Militant Extremists, well-financed by Mideast oil money”. The list was commonly referred to as “The list of 57”. I was later told it had been expanded to about 90 names and forwarded to the FBI.

This happened not after 9-11, but 7 or 8 years ago. Muslims afraid of other Muslims.

I suspect the Iranians you knew would still consider you a friend. Just in case you’re not aware, the militants running Iran right now have tremendous opposition within Iran itself.

Many leaders in the Mideast have tried for years to unify the countries of the region, but in truth an Afghan and an Egyptian have about as much in common as a Norwegian and an Australian. What better way to unify the peoples of the region than to appeal to some Extremist version of the Islamic faith?

Keep that in mind, please … and, having said that, I’m right there with you looking for payback.

If some Muslims would go ahead and bag bin Laden and hand him over, it would go a long way toward proving they're not all bad.

As it goes now, every day in Iraq convinces more people that they are all bad.

The fact that the 911 killers were sold their training by other Americans was a serious betrayel of trust. It triggered a complete loss of trust, until something happens to restore it.

You've swallowed the media line. Rumsfeld may be the best Secretary of Defense ever. I agree that if there really is a problem, it needs to be fixed.

I wonder what B-17 pilots felt like in Europe when they heard B-29's were being flown in the Pacific. Or, what did it feel like in squadrons that were flying P-39's or P-40's when the Mustangs were being delivered? Did they all stop and accuse the SecWar of improperly supplying the troops? Did they refuse to fly missions until the best equipment finally arrived?

It might be different if the Administration involved the whole country. I, for one, would donate the doors off of my car if it would help. I would even work nights and weekends to help weld armor - if that was the answer. Unfortunately, the attack on our economy was just as great as the attack on our spirit. The President has decided that it's best to keep the economy going while a limited military handles the dirty work. Like you, I hope that doesn't extend to having limited armor.

It is a respectful difference of opinion, though. Both our hearts are in the same place.

Supporting the troops as well,

Tom B

Primary accusation is that they are running around Iraq in un-armoured vehicles.

Anybody rememer the Jeep? The Half track? Deuce and a Quarter? That's what we used in WWII to get our troops around. Now I don't know what was so armoured about what is basically a 2 ton flatbed truck with a wood gate around it, but it was good enough in WWII. But today, to deliver supplies on defended roads we're supposed to send everyone in a tank? That's a little un-realistic. And those loving soldiers that stood up and asked Rumsfield in their meeting last week? They were culled and fed by a reporter what to ask. The soldiers should at least pull kp for being led by the press. The reporter ought to be shot for treason. Hell, why not just finish up and start shooting soldiers while he was at it? Nothing like pumping up the moral of the other side. Of course a reporter would argue that it was his duty to crawl in bed with the enemy and bend over to show the other side. What they really do though is get more of our soldiers killed. Shame they can't see that.
