Steve:

I drew this up for you if you want to build one. It is a Zone 2 for LA 46 based on the Time Machine 50 wing. Could be a real killer.

There is only one block required for construction. The rest is sheeting, triangle pieces, foam, and laser cut pieces.

I have the PDF file. You will have to hit the "rotate counterclockwise" button in Adobe Reader.

Neato. How in the world do you find the time? Serious question.

Holy Cow GZ, that is awesome! I'm humbled to say the least.

I'll get in touch with you about the PDF file and specifics on how to work with the laser cutter.

This could be be a popular size for this design-I'm living proof that any idiot can get a LA-46 to run good enough to win some contests, at least in Advanced. Cheap good motor+wicked cool looking and great flying plane sounds sweet. TD may wonder about a sudden run on 50 size cores....!

awesome....totally awesome

I am jealous and you are going to teach me how you note your plans. It all looks so good. The lettering and the leader work is great!!

Just download the PDF and take it to OfficeMax for a full size print. Look it over and then look over some of the threads for construction that I have put of recently. The construction would be the same.

I made the belly pan using flat sides that are sanded to shape. It works well, but if you wanted to do blocks or shells you could. I was just trying to make the construction easy and cheap (blocks are a bitch to get sometimes, that is why I use 3/32" sheet shells). The "Stiletto/Patternmaster" style construction works well though.

I agree with you asessment of the LA 46. I think few have really put the plane/engine together to make that engine work hard. For $60 you simply cannot beat it, but it has a tendancy to overpower many .35 and .40 sized designs.

An alternative, of course, would be to simply get yourself a Buc 740, but a Zone 46 would be the first one on your block. It is a little different design than most of the low power .40 designs. The tail moment is a full 18" ad the nose is 9.5". The design would be best at a more rearward CG than most of the other designs.

That would be my hope.

When I talk to Steve on the phone, I can hear it. He has the bug.

Very Very impressive. May I put it on my build list?

Sure. I could set it up with Kyle from Tanks Hangar to obtain the laser cut parts (maybe I could even get Steve Moon from UHP to sell the short kit). The foam wing is available from Tom Dixon. The controls would be available (pre made) from Tom Morris.

I pay $35 for my controls set from Tom Morris. He has all the specs for all of my designs. This one would only require a slightly shorter front pushrod. I use an all ball link system.

Kyle or maybe even Steve from UHP (hint) could package the laser cut portion.

The foam wing, wood, and sheeting would come from Tom Dixon, I am sure he would appreciate the business.

All you would need then is some landing gear wire, landing gear blocks, and some other misc stuff the build the plane.

As I see it, no one has specifically designed an airframe specifically for this potent engine. All of the planes I see using the LA 46 were designed for the Fox 35 or various less powerful 40's. I believe the LA 46 could handle more than 60 oz quite well, as most people are down tuning the LA 46 a lot and not really giving it much room to "breath". This plane would be good for low to mid 50's weight.

Brad,
Steve does have the bug, but I think he's got a couple of screws loose, too! LOL!!
He's real confused..... engineer you know!
He does need to have a real good, bullet proof, ship.
So far, he's been flying planes that are pretty good designs, but he needs to get the WHOLE system together. Then we can boot him out of Advanced!
But he's a good buddy and a real good, improving, flier! (Love ya, Stevie Boy!)

sigh....lets hear it for the peanut gallery.....!

I'm not a good strategic planner, and being a slow builder means what I build is obselete sometimes, but I'll keep working at it. I can't wait to get to Kinkos and print out those plans...
Steve

PS Be careful Bill, I'll get my wife to call your Doc and make him do a sinusectomy on you like they did your Dad-thats GOT to hurt!!!!
hehehehehe!

Oh Ok,
THAT'S how it's gonna be, HUH??

Hmmmmmmm.. a *little* (pint?) isoproply alcohol in the fuel......
ROTFLMBO!!!!!!!

I can think of about a dozen good "reasons" for getting you booted!! Of course they all ("reasons") are SE Advanced fliers!

Guy's, Steve is really one of the "good guys", just a *little* misguided. (there, that should swell his head enough for a couple crucial mistakes in his patterns at our next contest!)

Steve I have known you for a few years and saw you practice at Atlanta last year in windy weather and you did ok. Here is what is happening. You are getting to be a much better flyer than you were just a few years ago. The plane that you thought was great then now seems to be not so good any more. The wind shows up all it's weak points. You are now expecting a lot more out of your plane. What ever you build put all the improvements that have been told you here into it. It's the total of all the little things that kill a good plane. I have seen a lot of versions of this plane fly and some were great but many were poor flyers. It's not the design it's the way they were built. Many years ago in Florida Bill Rich and I would look for windy days to fly in so as to get used to that kind of weather. We both started to build super strong planes even if it added a little weight. Well built controls and super strong flaps make a big difference. It may surprise many people but the strongest flaps I have had were on the last Juno with the geo ribs in them.
