Non-Dope finishes applied after the Clear Dope

Hey fella's, I am interested in putting together a couple of stunt ships for next year. I have just started using Brodak Dope for the basic prep. I have heard of other modelers applying acrylic lacquer car finishes to there model but did not get the Name brand of the material. Also I have heard of an automotive clear coat which is bullet proof and is reasonably light. Any help in this direction would be appreciated.

I don't think name brand is important with the acrylic lacquer. You can put it over the dope, but I don't see the real advantage. You still have to keep the color coat as thin as possible or weight will build up rapidly. On the down side, you have to make sure you get proper adhesion or you will have peeling problems. It is usually best to stick with one product from beginning to end. In this case, if you start with Brodak dope as a base, continue on for everything.

The clear coat you are talking about also comes in several brand names, but is a two part material that is very toxic. It is not only toxic, but its effects are cumulative. You need a proper breathing apparatus to protect you properly when using it, and by proper I mean oxygen mask, not just a filter. It is best to steer clear of this stuff unless you have a friend in an auto paint shop.

I agree with Mr. Neumann. It is best to stay with one brand from start to finish. Also, it states in the instructions of the poly clear that it is not to be used over laquer (dope).
