Engine identifications

At my first swapmeet (at Watford) I bought some engines!

I have 2 OS MAX 35's. one is a Max-S that looks pretty clean with a box and silencer (£25) - has (GV) stamped under one of the lugs. The other has a trumpet shaped venturi (£20) and the serial number 18027 on the side, one of the backplate screws has been replaced it has the same size stack as a Merco/Stallion etc. I just missed a third OS 35 in the £5 junk box on the same stand.

I have an Enya 35 Model 5224 (£25) – plain bearing square intake (no 2) – and I found a strapon Enya silencer (£5) on another stand which fits perfectly. How can I find out which head is on it low or high compression. Anybody got spare venturis?

I got a Veco 35 (£35) , 3 bolt backplate very small exhaust stack (reversed like a K&B).

I got two Merco 35’s. One was £5 and looks as though it has at some time had a Veco style venturi/exhaust clapper on it. The other was £7.50 and is in generally better nick it has one chipped head fin – I also got a spare Merco Head with the read paint still on it for £3 though!

I also got an R/C version of a Flash 35 for £5 which has a chipped lug.and will look for a Venturi for it.

All in all a very good day.

Any extra info on the above would be much appreciated.

I've not heard of anyone knowing what the letter codes here and there on OS's like Max-S might mean.

If it looks a lot like a Max-I and Max-III (steel fins are among the markers, as is a rather large flared intake - almost trombone rather than trumpet in scale - it's probably a Max-II.

Never have known much about Enyas, and while I may have once had some bits, such as spare heads & venturis on hand for that model, I am sure those are gone now.

Those were made from parts supplied by K&B, and are nice old engines that run similarly to the Green Head series.

The only really useful new bit you got was placing the Max-II in its production sequence, I'm afraid . .

Well, no - I can add this - the Max-I through III engines were strong old beasties, with characteristics similar to those of the later model (four bolt backplate) K&B GH's, which they somewhat resembled. They like to run in a two stroke, not a 4-2-4, which is another way they are like most of the old Torps.

FLASH!! Tony - As far as I know, it's a copy of the OS MAX-S 35, made in Taiwan. Mine seems a bit poor on fit, even though it's new. I'll be curious to see how yours runs. Maybe we have the only two in the world!

Three in the world, Bob. I bought a decent in box Flash at a swap in Freeland, Mi for $5. And sold it on rconline.

You're right, though; it was a OS 35-S clone.

Make that four Flashes!! I found one in my stash of strange Japanese engines.

And Dr John Dixon - one of the UK's best known engine collectors and tuners also has two - one r/c and one standard.

He did ask whether Irvin and I had a TOP 35 - whatever that is.

I'll throw in my two cents, guys. I also have a Flash 35.

I ordered these two items from the above company here in the UK on Monday afternoon and they arrived this morning - now that's what I call service the venturi was £1.75, the head £4.36 and £2 for post and packing!

The head is a MkV it fits ok but externally it's taller than the old head - the difference between the two internally is tiny the old one is 3mm and the new 3.5mm.
