OS LA 40

While visiting my local hobby shop I came across a LA 40 plain bushing, It was only $89.95 (canadian) thats about $60.00 U.S., dirt cheap, I was also told it only weighed 10.5 oz anyone know anything about this engine? At that wieght and price it's sounding like a killer deal.

That makes it one of the heaviest 40's with or without the ball bearing shaft that exists. The FP it replaced was sorta heavy already for a plain bushing engine at 8 1/2 ounces.

Your query about the LA versus the Tower in a Flight Lines thread already has one answer I wrote, so I will ignore the one at John T's Yahoo C-L Club, and will probably never see one at RCO, if there's a fourth or fifth duplicate of the same thing floating around somewhere (I seldom read much of the message traffic at RCO and never re-registered to write stuff there).

The LA engine has the same bore, stroke, timing, etc. of its predecessor the FP, but it is heavier and built of very poor quality. Now the Tower 40, on the other hand, is a true clone of the FP--built the way OS used to make them. It has a fully machined crank (not cast as on the LA) and is of true ABC construction. And it weighs just a smidgeon over 8 ounces. Cost--about $50 US, sometimes less. This engine is a killer deal, and, although you may not be able to get it at your local hobby shop, you can certainly order one in. It needs a CL venturi and needle, but so does the LA. And for those who are still wondering, it has the same mount dimensions, the same shaft length, and the same muffler mount as the FP it is cloned after.
