Yea, in this picture, it looks a bit washed out because I shot a couple of coats of clear on the colors before inking and sanded it out to give a bit smoother surface to ink on. Wish I'd given it a couple more as it was a challenge to get the lines to work right.
Should be cool looking at least. Hope if flies decently.

Well, I'm starting to wish I'd just shot catalyzed polyurethane. But it's getting a dope topcoat. Has 3 coats on right now and I plane to do a little sanding tomorrow them lay on some more. I had some trouble with the gun today (had some junk in it) and I ended up with quite a lot of orange peal followed by a complete cleaning of the gun. So I'll work it over tomorrow and hit it again.
Oh, to answer your question, it's Certified non-taunting clear. I'm using my old formula: 40% clear, 57% thinner, about 3% retarder, a couple of drops of fisheye killer and a bit of Flexall.
See you here next March?

I have used the Certified non-tauhtning clear, went on real well, I don't have much experience with spraying, seemed to like warm weather more than not. When I bought it from AircraftSpruce.com, it was less tha $8 a quart, I believe. Now it's around $13. Good stuff, however.
Mike,
Probably not until a year from March. Depends on the out-laws.
John,
I buy it by the gallon from Aircraft Spruce or Spencer. Usually $25-$30. Thinner about $18 or so.
Sparky,
Yes, it is.
It's far over the sparky-line for weight at 62oz on 765 square inches.

Mine is over the line but it has to have clear yet it will be 59 oz bummer!

Did you have to pay for haz-met for the gallon, which I understand costs quite alot more to ship than say 3 quarts.

I suppose I spent too long looking at the Cobra, but this new plane seems enormous. The original USA-1 is about 725 square inches. The wing on this plane is bigger. I haven't actually measured the square inches but the span is 3 more inches than the USA-1 and the flaps are a half inch wider and also wider overall at the tip. It's about a 3/16" thicker airfoil, though the same airfoil shape. That, with the longer tail moment (a lot longer) and 25% bigger tailplane and the thing seems HUGE. May have to get John out there to hold my belt if the wind is blowing.

Last year at the Huntersville, North Carolina contest there were two or three of these Randy Smith designed, 40 sized (piped) ships that were new. Randy spent quite alot of time helping to trim out the new planes, so if you can make it to Huntersville the first week-end in June, you might get some free trimming help!
I plan to have it at the Northwest Regionals in a couple of weeks. Providing I've had a chance to get at least some flights on it (the weather isn't being very cooperative). I suspect that Brett Buck and Paul Walker can help me out. Hunterville is a, ah, bit far for me.

I LOVE the "Powered by Internal Combustion" graphic, a REAL Stunt model.
Now please don't freak out people, It's just my opinion.

Great job once again Randy!
