Here are some fotos of some of the Brazilian P51s that will be invadeing Muncie for the Nats. We will have a team of about 30 Brazilians all flying P51s with Saito .72 or OS Ultimate .70 fourcycle engines. All were built from Bene Rodrigueses' kit. Finished weight of most of the planes is about 1.85kg. Take a special look at my plane "The Girl from Ipanema" with the sexy nose art. Be patient with my presentation of the fotos since this is the first time that I have done this operation and have not learned how to insert the fotos in text the way Al Rabe does.---Thomas Case

Here is a P51 in Blue.
Guys I have a sad story to tell! The "Girl from Ipanema" died this weekend. I was practicing triangles and on the upward leg the "Saito" quit. I tried to run backwords , but was not fast enough. The result was a terrible crash and the plane is a basket case. There was 15cc of fuel left in the tank. Why it quit I don't know. I am going back to my trusty OS Ultimate .70 which never fails.
We have three weeks before takeing off on July 6 for Muncie and will try to ready another P51, but I may be the only one on the team not flying a P51. Thomas Case:'(

We believe the four cycle engines to be better for stunt. The noise of the two cycle piped engines is terrible. The fourcycles purr and are much more realistic.
We are haveing better luck with the OS Ultimate .70 than with the Saito .72. Our Saitos are not constant and we are still fooling around with the recirculation of the oil. We got the power up on the Saito now, but its not constant. Something is wrong and we don't know what. The OS is a beauty and goes for weeks with the same needle valve setting. We must find a way to get the Saitos to run right before the Nats. My "Girl from Ipanema" has a Saito .72 that is giving me fits. No regularity. Changed engines and the problem persisted. Changed tanks and got some improvement. About 15 of our planes will have Saito .72 so we have a lot at stake to fix the problem. Thomas Case:'(

I feel so helpless. I wish I was there to help you guys with your 72's. Heck, I would even lend one of you my 72!!

Milton: Would appreciate any guidance that you can give us about the Saito .72. We are useing a 14x6 top flite power point prop. 20%nitro, 20%synthetic oil and 60% alcohol fuel. The carburetor has a .285 inch bore with a super Tigre needle valve that has been trimmed down to 3.5mm diameter. The recirculation of the crankcase unburned fuel is direct to the carburetor. The tank is the same as the one that we use with the OS .70 and has a floppy RC style pickup. do you see anything wrong here?--Thomas Case
Just a couple of ideas. A few months ago - before 'our' Nats, my Saito 72 that had been running relatively 'trouble free' decided to start to play up. I still don't 'really' know what caused it as it seems to have settled down again although now I do have a different tank in the model.
My engine would run well one flight then the next at the same needle setting it would lean out and be all over the place. sometimes it would fly 3 or 4 times without trouble but other times horrible. Brian Eather suggested a couple of things and what 'seemed' to work was a few drops of "armour All" in the fuel. (about 3 squirts to 2 - 3 litres) I had heard about this before but didn't consider it a problem - the armour all is supposed to prevent 'foaming' up of the fuel - if that's happening. As well I put 1% extra oil in the mix (now 21% synthetic). Anyway it went like a song - had probably 50 - 80 flights just before and during the nats and no troubles. As said, I've now changed tanks and back to the old fuel mix without Armour All in it and 20% oil. The motor is just running beautifully. Perhaps it was just one of those unknown problems that arise from time to time, I don't know - but the Armour All might be worth a try if you're having troubles....

You're going to the NAT's and the World Champs this summer.
Good luck, and I'll see you in Valladolid.

Paul: Yes we will have a smaller contingent of P51s at the world Championship in Vallodolid, Spain. Eduardo Castaldelli and Bene Rodrigues will be flying P51s along with my son Thomas Jr. in the junior category. Our friend and holdout Paulo Gomes will be there flying his Amazon with a PA .65 on a pipe. Look forward to seeing you in Muncie and Spain.--Thomas Case

#9 sourceHey people, you get the feeling that the boys from Brazil are serious? Me thinks they are coming to Muncie to kick some "A" and leave with trophies.
Good luck in Muncie, now with respect to Futbol in Germany next week you don't need any luck at all.

In some cases some of them don't even know what plug is in the engine,("it came with it"). Yet, where I live, at the Sepulveda flying field in Los Angeles,CA, the Saito is the hands down choice in 4 strokes because according to them, "it runs and the OS Max's don't". The Saito's also seem to be the runaway choice for the proflie 3D flyers because so much of their manuevers are done close to the ground(hovering etc.) If their engine craps out, their dead.
Stunt flyers love complexity. We can't help it,(lol). I have seen plumbing on a Saito 40A powered stunt ship what would frighten an aircraft carrier designer. If I was indepently wealthy, I would fly down to where you guys are and get you hooked up ASAP. I would definitely help all of you guys get dead nuts reliable runs with your 72's. But, not being there and actually getting my hands on the setups, I can't.
