We've been having a problem with rabbits in our garden this spring - must be the peak of the population cycle. After they stripped the leaves from one of my wife's favourite rose bushes it was enough. Since we live in town, and not being a great fan of firearms anyway, I bought a cage type trap. Baited it with the recommended pieces of apple and carrot and waited. After about a day they started nibbling on the bait - in fact, throwing it around with wild abandon but the trap did not trip. I lubricated the linkage and rebaited, this time with somewhat smaller pieces - same result. I baited it again, this time with small pieces of apple, strategically located so that the rabbit would have to reach across the bait tray and trip it. Again, the bait was cleaned out but the trap did not trip. I decided that the bait needed to be fastened to the tray but how to do that? Tonight the light bulb went on - I stuck two pieces of apple to the bait tray with medium cynano - in about 30 minutes I had caught the little blighter!

Best, Hoovie

Sounds like your name for a while was either Wylie E Coyote or Yosemite Sam. Be very very quiet, you are hunting wabbits!

Don't tell me those !#@^&&!! Poms took rabbits over there too!! Did they take foxes and pigs as well to feel at home? Many of the "pest" animals here were brought here on those first fleets and the blighters had a picnic breeding in a basically uninhabbited land. No wonder the Chinese built the Great Wall of China!

Yes we are lucky the traffic was that way or we would be knee deep in Roos and cold beer.

Having sampled warm Watney's at Heathrow, I'd say you chaps are in desperate NEED of cold beer.

Our bunny rabs are native stock. Rabbit and dumpings is really good. I wandered into a state-wide rabbit show one time. There is an amazing variety of domestic rabbits.

There is an Alan Dean Foster science fiction novel about aliens who are marooned on earth. Buggs Bunny is a propaganda device to prepare earth people for the coming out of these aliens. Anyone remember the title?

David, THANKS for posting such a great suggestion! We have the same problem here, and if my family wouldn't be so upset at the prospect of 'bit stew, I'd try it. Speaking of beer, I'm hoping they don't devour my hop vines... (yes, I brew my own, and soon hopefully with my own hops)

If the CA doesn't kill it, you can teach it to fly C/L.

A really good .17 cal airgun can be had for around $150 and produces minimal noise and neighbor irritation. Lotsa fun with paper targets & pop cans as well. Fear not, neither the Bunny nor the Tree Rat is in any way endangered. . . .

Yeah,
And .17 caliber pellets are cheaper than CA glue...Personally I use a Glock in 45 ACP but I don't have any close neighbors. Not cheap but very effective!

Probably less good eating after the .45 than after a .22LR..

You're spot on there Mike. Believe me it isn't a pretty site to come accross a 'Roo of any size in front of you whilst driving. The back road from here where I live to the Hunter River region is some 110 miles through the mountains and bush with not many inhabitants. As yet, I haven't actually hit one but generally that road has plenty of road kill on it most of the time. One of the guys here hit one on the way to the HV Champs in March and it sure dented more than his pride!

By the way! When are some more of you fellows coming down here to see some real Roos and sip some cold beer?

Here in Texas you see a lot of vans, SUV's and pickups with heavy pipework on the front to take care of whitetail deer. There will be a dead deer on the road every few miles. I think the figures are that whitetail deer are our most deadly wild animal because of killing people in wrecks. Way ahead of Grizzly bears!

Home DOG Security......#16 source
Our home was protected by an Attack Siamesse Cat until he died and was replaced a couple years later by an SUD (Sport Utility Dog).

During our pet-less years we sustained a raccoon attack that cost over $1,000 in house & car damage. We haven't lost a single leaf with Red Hot Frank on alert.

Forget the traps, chemical warfare, and firepower. I takes an animal to beat an animal.

Good entertainment, too.

Our SUD alerted me at about 3:00AM this morning that a possum was trying to steal my outdoor barbeque. Poochie treed the possum and a .22cal pelet gun finalized the issue. I hate being wakened at 03:00. It puts me in a bad mood. We've also had a number of rabid possums around here lately. I don't mess with rabies!
