NW STUNT

The Northwest regionals in Albany Oregon were a big hit. Lots of cool planes, great weather, and great PEOPLE. Stunt was a huge success. 14 experts, same in advanced. Lots of good flying. Mr. Walker and Mr. Fitz went toe to toe…same o same o. HOWEVER, Second and Third had some heavy hitters. Chris Cox, Howard Rush, Brett Buck, Bruce Perry, Jack Pitcher, Pat Johnson all top twenty flyers. Howard put up the best flight of his young stunt life. So too everyone that was their SUPER JOB! C-YA Next year.

A note to those that may feel they are not qualified to enter a meet with this sort of participation (world class flyers and all that) DO IT! THESE GUYS ARE JUST FOLKS LIKE YOURSELF! You will be treated well, as well as having some fun!
I was thrilled to score nearly double my age. Met some great people, got some wonderfull advise and generally had a good time. You could too.

This was a fun contest, the weather was uncanny for Northwest Oregon for this time of year, IOW, is wasn't 50 degrees and raining the whole time. Turnout seemed a little low compared to the best year at Roseburg, but reasonable.

Scott Urabe's model was a Dixon KA-10 with a Saito .56. The 4S models appear to be very slow. The sound is very deceptive, they're not that slow. Emil Kovak's OTS 3rd place model (mentioned by Brett) is a Humongus, with no cockpit or headrest.

It was a fun contest, but Oy, were my feet sore Sunday night! The continually varying wind directions really hurt some flights. Judging D-Bat (Diesel Combat, British style) Friday was just as much fun as judging Expert PA, and didn't take nearly as much running around the circle! Wasn't that Sunshade/Dust Devil thing exciting after the contest? Jack Pitcher deserves a lot of credit for seeing how important it was to tackle that runaway sunshade with concrete block attached, bum ankle and all. Steve

Brief comments: Excellent administration from Dave and Alice Gardner. What appeared to be consistent and accurate judging. Hope y'all saved your score sheets, lots of reliable feedback available there.

It had to have been slightly disheartening for David and Brett to make the drive north, only to find Walker's Miss America P-51 gracing the front of each and every 2002 NW Regionals T-shirt, these being sold by the case, worn by a great many.

It was encouraging to see David bounce a landing in the first round. Okay, wrong wording. But it was kinda nice knowing the sort of mistakes I make can also be made by one of the very best.

Unfortunate second-round draw meant PW could leave his model in the van. I am in favor of letting Dave G. randomly draw first round, set the board for maximum entertainment potential in second round...

That was Alice cotton-royer. She flew very well for not putting any time in this year. I had only six flights on my new plane so I'm very pleased. It's Advanced that is fun to watch. All these guy's fights it out.

Hey Dave and a special Hi to Alice, who volunterily moved up to Expert laast year as she wanted the challenge, much to my relief. She's a tough competitor and won't give an inch when going nose to nose. I see that some of this is rubbing off on Dave, (good times) Royer.

Congrats Dave on what sounds like a super flight.

Actually, Advanced is every bit as tough as Expert at the NW Regionals. There are some great pilots who try and show up each year. I surely missed not making it this year.

My Vans' engine didn't blow up, but something similar. The darned thermostat stuck, overheated the engine, it actually killed the engine while I was trying to limp into the shop. After we fixed it, and luckily the engine seems fine, we found that it cooked the tranny to the point that it's going to have to be re-built. I think it would have been less expensive to replace the stupid engine.

I hope to have it finished and back on the road soon so I can make a few contests this year.

I really wanted to be there.

Excuse me, but we have no saps in Advanced or Expert. As has been pointed out to you, our newest Expert is one Alice Cotton-Royer. Alice was not kicked into Expert, it was her choice to move up, and if so inclined she will explain her decision. (I know already, just don't want to blab about my favorite CSF, Chick Stunt Flier.)

There are no complaints, no problems, none!, in this area when it comes to flying against the best.

Everyone at the NW Regionals contest flew wonderfully. It was a great contest.

I especially liked the heavenly air we had every single afternoon - it made all the airplanes so very happy which, of course, made the pilots all so very happy.

Missed you John Miller. I know you wanted to be there. Hope to see you at another contest.

Now, to speak for myself: I love flying with the most excellent world champion Expert flyers. I may never win, but I don't care. The Expert world class flyers I get to fly with are a total inspiration to me. They call on me to push for excellence and teach me how to set realistic attainable goals.

Yup the Golden State Champs are pretty much the cream of the crop as far as Expert contestants go, but only three prominent names from the south central? I counted six myself. That would include five time Nats champion and two time world champion Bob Gieseke, two time Nats champion Al Rabe, PAMPA President and perinial top 20 qualifier Frank McMillan, perinial top 20 qualifier Frank Williams, many times 2nd place at the Nats Bill Rutherford, and Legendary competitor flyer Dee Rice. And as for the local talent, if you don't know who Richard Oliver is now, you will after the 2002 Nats. Oh and since you included Doug in your post Wally, I guess that makes this list seven instead of the six I counted.

Yes you do have more in CA for sure there is no doubt about it. You also have a high regard for those you see fly often. However since I live in Dallas TX which is quite a drive from SoCal. there are only a hand full on your big list that make me think wow just as it did when you read Brad's list. I have heard some names but never seen them fly and probably wont get to see them. That is the part I hate. I wish I could come see your big giant pool of talent and see how I stand up against them. As for now I will see I fare against those from your area who decide to make the big haul out to Muncie.

Mike Scott is on that list and he is the 2000 Nats Adv Champ. A big accomplishment for sure. I been at it since 96 and couldn't pull it off. One more thing that blows me away about Bob G. He has one the worlds one time. But he told me that he is pretty sure he was on 8 world teams he wasnt sure of the number but he said he was pretty sure it was 8! That is alot of times to make the team. That is along to be at the top of the heap. He was also asked to warm up the judges one year. AMAZING!!!!

That is one thing that is so Impressive about the current crop at the Top. They have been there along time. They hone their skills and then stay there, even if they decide to do it with 4 enging bombers!!!!!!!! WOW!!! Very impressive how these guys just keep doing it over and over. It makes it that much more tough for the up and comers to get in there. It means there is going to have to be that much more work.

I was going by some text that had not been verified for historical accuracy. It quite likely was once, but you know, when you read things you like to take the most favorable conclusions. Someone from the U.S. has won twice, was it Billy? He sure has been on just about every team since the early 1970's!
Of course the point I was making to Wally was that there is plenty of good talent for flying models in every area of the country. If you want to count the retired champions in the W/C's and the Nats, I don't think any other place can hold a candle to Florida. Like Al Rabe told you, it takes a huge amount of obsession to get to the top of the heap in C/L aerobatics. I finally figured out that I don't have the dedicated time, nor the required backing from the wife needed to pursue that kind of obsession. I fly some, take what I get and that's as good as it gets for me.
